The Next Revolution In Medicine: Scientific Wellness, AI And Disease Reversal with Nathan Price & Lee Hood
Quote
It’s an exciting time to be in medicine as we watch technological advances completely change the way we understand the body. There are revolutions happening on multiple levels–the “omics” revolution that looks at the interactions of the genome, microbiome, metabolome, transcriptome, and more; the digitization of data that involves tracking our biology through wearables like the Oura ring or continuous glucose monitors; and the systems biology medicine movement that is reframing the way we look at preventing disease and healing the body.

Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m excited to talk to Drs. Leroy Hood and Nathan Price about the future of personalized healthcare through scientific wellness, how artificial intelligence is changing the medical industry, and why it’s essential to a wellness-centered future.

Dr. Leroy Hood is the CEO and founder of Phenome Health, a non-profit organization developing a project called Human Phenome Initiative (HPI), based on the science of wellness, which will sequence the genes and generate the longitudinal phenomes of one million people over 10 years. He has co-founded 17 biotech companies, including Amgen, Applied Biosystems, Rosetta, and Arivale. His many national and international awards include the Lasker Prize, the Kyoto Prize, and the National Medal of Science. Currently, he is also the Chief Strategy Officer/Professor at the Institute of Systems Biology in Seattle.

Dr. Nathan Price is the Chief Scientific Officer of Thorne HealthTech and author of The Age of Scientific Wellness. In 2019, he was named one of the 10 Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine by the National Academy of Medicine, and in 2021 he was appointed to the Board on Life Sciences of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. He spent much of his earlier career as a Professor and Associate Director of the Institute for Systems Biology, co-director with Lee Hood of the Hood-Price Lab for Systems Biomedicine, and is Affiliate Faculty at the University of Washington in Bioengineering and Computer Science and Engineering. He has co-authored more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications and given over 200 talks and keynotes.

We kick off our conversation by talking about why disease prevention—not disease treatment—is the next revolution in medicine. The leading causes of death in the US have shifted from infectious diseases to chronic conditions, which are largely preventable through lifestyle modification. This shift requires a new, preventative approach. Today, doctors wait for disease symptoms to arise before starting to treat patients. In the age of “scientific wellness,” doctors will be able to spot the signs of disease years before physical symptoms manifest and use small, highly personalized interventions to prevent illness.

We also get into how our life experiences lead to our present state of health. Influenced by our genome, lifestyle choices, and exposure to environmental toxins, our personal history leaves signs that can be read through the proteins and metabolites in our blood. Understanding these blood-borne signals enables doctors to tailor our health interventions in ways that were previously unimaginable.

We also discuss why AI is the most important tool for optimizing our health and how doctors will be able to use it to spot the signs of disease years before symptoms manifest, providing a chance to prevent or reverse many chronic diseases.

I hope you’ll tune in to hear more about the incredible tools and systems that are changing healthcare for the better.

Wishing you health and happiness,

Mark Hyman, MD

Yes, preventive medicine is the way to go, it's what I'm trying to pursue in my own case. Betting on hitting 100 in good shape and with a well-working brain. Possibly beyond 100, provided I'm still fit.

I believe you will succeed mccoy.

Ah, Ah, thanks for the good wish, I may succeed unless there is some strong karma of death at work.
What I'm doing, is trying to minimize all seeds of premature death karma by the action of wisdom and knowledge. And some meditation of course. But I'll tell you what, I'm not attached to the results, although I'm pretty attached to having a state of reasonable good health while living. Living until 120 and being disabled is not a good outlook.

Steve, Mark Hyman mentioned your girl the other day.

It's 8:44 now- the number of the angels. We're connected in mysterious ways and the tethers of consciousness glimmer from time to time.

Is There A Way Out Of Our Political Mess That Makes America Healthier?

Quote
We live in a country that claims to be based on science, goodwill, and policies intended to help people. But these things are often heavily influenced and manipulated by industry, particularly Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Ag, which have corrupted many institutions, politicians, professional associations, and research entities.

Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m excited to talk to Marianne Willamson, candidate for President in 2024 and a good friend of mine, about her vision for how we can change our food system, economy, environment, and public health outcomes for the better.

Marianne Williamson is a political activist, author, non-denominational spiritual lecturer and New York Times bestselling author. She has written fifteen books, seven New York Times bestsellers, and four of them hitting number one. Her career began in the 1980s when she became deeply involved with HIV/AIDS activism. A long-time champion for the LGBTQ+ community, she founded Project Angel Food to deliver meals to the homebound unable to shop or cook for themselves. To date, the charitable organization has served over 16 million meals. She also founded the LA Center for Living, the Manhattan Center for Living, and cofounded The Peace Alliance.

In 2020, she ran for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States and is now a candidate for President in 2024. As an essential part of her platform, Marianne proposes a 21st Century Economic Bill of Rights, a Department of Peace, reparations for slavery, a Department of Children and Youth, and a just transition from a dirty to a clean economy. A progressive Democrat, Marianne proposes a new economic beginning, including universal health care, tuition-free college and tech school, and a guaranteed living wage.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Marianne’s career as a spiritual thought leader, political activist, and author has focused on facilitating personal and systems transformation on things that really matter, and at the core of Marianne’s campaign is the promise of systemic change. Marianne and I discuss what that looks like and the most important changes we need to make in America today.

We currently have a food system that is geared towards profiting a few at the expense of many. It’s also a system that simply can’t endure over time. Hunger relief and the obesity crisis both get attention in America, but what doesn’t get attention is how to increase the accessibility of good food to people who can’t access it. Marianne and I talk about her food safety and security plan and what we can do to transform our food system.

Access to healthcare and health equity are also pressing issues. Marianne and I discuss her Whole Health Plan and how we can address healthcare disparities and ensure all individuals have access to quality healthcare services.

One of the world’s greatest explorers, Robert Swan, said, “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” Climate change is a global challenge that requires collective action. Marianne and I discuss the key steps individuals, communities, and governments should take to mitigate the effects of climate change and the specific policies she believes are the most crucial in addressing water quality and renewable energy.

While I’m not endorsing any particular candidate for President, I do encourage you to take a deep look at Marianne’s campaign, as it uncovers the root of our division in America and brings to light issues that we are not hearing anywhere else. I hope you’ll tune in.

Wishing you health and happiness,

Mark Hyman, MD

Hey Steve, hope you get to listen to the chat between Mark Hyman and Marianne Williamson. She's well spoken, and it's a great interview.

There's a lot I agree with, and maintain my disagreement in regards to reparations. What makes me happy about 2024 and all the candidates coming to light, almost everyone agrees there's a problem with the system the way it is today: The alliance between monopolized interest, corporations and government. Greed, as underlined by Uwe in another post.

It really gives me a sense of confidence concerning Swami Vidyadhishanandas prediction, years ago, about a reformed capitalism taking place in America which will be made apparent as early as 2029 where younger, more compassionate leaders replace of the old. This realization will come full circle 2034. 11 years from now. We can expect one more major disaster created by the dying age, fighting to maintain its authority, sometime between 2025-2026. It might actually mean severely reduced population as a consequence. And much of what they wish to see come into fruition, will.

I'm not sure I agree with Marianne Williamsons stance on Emergency Powers. I look at the COVID scam and see how having emergency powers positioned big pharma, big tech, government and special interest in favorable positions at the cost of personal responsibility and well being of humanity. Real doctors and scientist were censored, real damages were created as a consequence of the forced participation of an experiment, where preventative medicines were censored and vilified and long term consequences are still swept under a rug today. The worlds response to covid cost people their jobs, created unspoken amounts of waste, and has cost people their lives.

I know, as well, that there are nefarious elements planted in the climate concern. The WEF and Black Rock have their own agenda and use the climate crisis to advance their wealth. So, it's a really delicate or tricky situation- because going green as laws are written and passed in the halls of congress, actually aren't bettering our environment but catering to special interest at the cost of our sovereignty. Slavery to something like a social credit score being a serious concern for humanities future. Look at the people who called for making life difficult for those who did not want to take an experimental injection, by denying them goods and services and turning them against their own families.

I think I would like to see Donald Trump, Marianne Williamson, Vivek Ramaswamy and Robert F Kennedy JR all at a debate stage. I think this awakening to the forces described above, has become more common place during Trumps presidency. It may be all these candidates have something to offer as well as something highly disagreeable. But I believe these are all promising candidates. It does give me a sense of hope for our future.

I would have liked to seen Tulsi Gabbard thrown into this equation but unfortunately, the special interest within her own party in alliance with Big Tech really bullied her out of the picture in her last presidential race.

I also maintain the belief that the 2020 election was not legitimate. There's a lot of corruption in our voting system and in our legal systems. So I fantasize this debate with a bit of dispassion. Still, listening to this interview was really pleasant... I was surprised to hear Mark Hyman advocate for Tucker Carlson, where he says Tucker is the only person that allowed him on the news to speak for an hour uninterrupted about the problem with food and healthcare system.

This coming together, despite having things we disagree about, is a part of the bigger picture necessary for humanities evolution into the Golden Age.

Unlike our physical body, which is subject to aging, inflammation, and disease, we have a quantum body that exists on a sub-atomic level and is the infinite, invisible source of everyday reality that affects our thoughts, feelings, sensations, and biological responses. Without our quantum body, there is no physical body.

On today’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m excited to talk to Deepak Chopra about our quantum body and how we can use it to change the trajectory of our health and well-being.

Deepak Chopra is a world-renowned pioneer in integrative medicine and personal transformation and the founder of the Chopra Foundation and Chopra Global. Deepak is a clinical professor of family medicine and public health at the University of California, San Diego, and serves as a senior scientist with the Gallup Organization. He is the author of more than ninety books translated into forty-three languages, including numerous New York Times bestsellers. Time magazine has described Deepak as “one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the century.”

We begin our conversation by talking about the difference between our physical body and our quantum body—or, as Deepak explains it, our soul or spirit body. It’s a concept that spiritual and religious traditions have been built on for thousands of years.

Throughout our conversation, Deepak discusses how we can bridge the gap between the abstract nature of quantum physics and the tangible, experiential aspects of the human body.

Busyness is more pervasive than ever, and Deepak shares how the belief of not having enough time affects our physiology. We explore how our perception of time and space impacts our relationship to our bodies and our health.

We’re learning more and more about how the way we live directly influences our gene expression. Deepak explains how practices that stimulate our vagus nerve—the longest nerve in our body—promote physical healing, and he breaks down why disease is actually becoming optional.

Deepak also shares his daily practice to overcome the fear of death, the four intentions he starts his day with, and why we are not our brains.

This is a fascinating discussion that scratches the surface of how we can apply this science to create better health at every age. I hope you’ll tune in.

Wishing you health and happiness,
Mark Hyman, MD

I am purchasing the Seed probiotic/prebiotic and changing my daily supplemental routine. I will be taking this with a multi-vitamin that is more encompassing than what I've been experimenting with last year.

Quote
How to Select a Probiotic and the Future of the Microbiome

Your gut microbiome is your inner garden—the more good bugs you have in it, the more likely it is to flourish. Our gut bacteria regulate many bodily functions, from creating vitamins to controlling our immune system, brain function, and, of course, our metabolism and weight. They are critical to our long-term health. But even if you’re eating the right things, you may need outside assistance to maintain plentiful and diverse gut bacteria. Probiotics help populate your gut with beneficial bacteria, improving your sleep, daily elimination, brain health, and so much more.

On today’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m excited to talk to Raja Dhir about the gut microbiome's important role in our overall health, its connection to various diseases, and what can be done to fix our gut.

Raja Dhir is co-founder and co-CEO of Seed Health, a microbiome science company pioneering innovations in probiotics and living medicines to impact human and planetary health. With unique expertise in translating scientific research for product innovation, Raja guides the development of Seed Health’s platform to enable rapid, efficient advancement of microbial research from discovery to market. He also leads the company’s academic collaborations, working with institutions like MIT, Harvard University, Stanford University, California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and the National Institute of Health (NIH) to drive innovation across the fields of microbiology, genetics, immunology, and ecology. He co-chairs Seed’s Scientific Board –an interdisciplinary group of leading scientists, researchers, and clinicians–with Dr. Jacques Ravel.

Raja also oversees Seed's environmental endeavors under SeedLabs and directs LUCA Biologics, a venture targeting the vaginal microbiome for unmet needs in urogenital and reproductive health.

We start our conversation by reviewing the specific ways our gut microbiome influences our health and its connection to autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases, mood disorders, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Raja also shares the three main drivers of microbiome health: what you eat, the medications you take, and your lifestyle.

We dive deep into akkermansia, a bacteria I’ve been very interested in since using it to heal my gut several years ago. Raja explains how to get the most out of taking akkermansia and the surprising effect it can have when eating a diet of ultra-processed foods.

Raja also shares his thoughts on the explosion of research on the gut microbiome, the need for a deeper understanding of the microbiome in medical practice, and the challenges in navigating the complex field.

Probiotics have gained immense popularity for supporting the microbiome. However, there’s also confusion and misinformation about them. We discuss what probiotics are, whether or not we should be taking them, and the importance of purity, potency, and efficacy when choosing a probiotic. Raja shares insights into Seed’s approach to probiotics, including using a broad spectrum consortium of bacteria.

Raja also talks about the impact that antibiotics have on the gut microbiome and the potential benefits of using probiotics to support your body after using antibiotics.

We are in an era of discovery when it comes to the gut microbiome and its connection to our overall health, and this is a fascinating conversation that you won’t want to miss!

Wishing you health and happiness,

My friendly bacteria has arrived. I have to say, I am thoroughly impressed by the effort of this company. I wonder if this will effect my dreams?

My progress towards health and certain lifestyle goals are steadily becoming normalized. I still have a few kinks to work on within the self, I suppose that's a life long journey. But I'm not giving up. Even if I am the reason for my hinderance.

~Keep on, keepin' on! =) <3 Zoom in the image to read all these nice little things *

Food: The Root Causes of Our Healthcare, Economic and Social Crises

Quote
Americans are sicker than ever, and it’s not only resulting in poor physical and mental health; it’s impacting our economy, our environment, our children’s future, and our national security.

On today’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m excited to talk to my longtime friend, activist, and Presidential candidate, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. about how we got here and what’s needed to turn things around.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is an independent candidate for President of the United States. He is the founder of the Waterkeeper Alliance—the world’s largest clean water advocacy group—and served as its longtime chairman and attorney. He founded the Children’s Health Defense, where he served as chairman and chief litigation counsel in its campaign to address childhood chronic disease and toxic exposures. He was also on the team that prosecuted and won the case against Monsanto for glyphosate's role in causing cancer.

As President, he promises to restore the middle class, unravel corporate capture, end the chronic disease epidemic, improve the quality of the water we drink and the air we breathe, heal the divide, fix our public education system, take care of our veterans, support the trades, make homes affordable again, and support regenerative farming, among other key priorities.

Nutrition is arguably the most important part of wellness, yet ultra-processed foods define the American diet. We kick our conversation off by talking about how this is driving our obesity, chronic disease, and mental health crises.

We live in a country that claims to be based on science, goodwill, and policies intended to help people. But these things are often heavily influenced and manipulated by industry, particularly Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Ag, which have corrupted many institutions, politicians, professional associations, and research entities. We discuss how corporate capture–in the public and private sectors—hinders efforts to address the root causes of chronic diseases and keeps America sick.

Addressing the health crisis requires a comprehensive approach, including improving access to healthy food, incentivizing healthcare providers to focus on prevention and root causes, and holding corporations accountable for their role in promoting unhealthy products. In response, Bobby shares his thoughts on how we can reduce healthcare costs and improve health outcomes nationwide.

We also discuss the mental health crisis and how addressing it requires a holistic approach that includes improving access to mental health services and addressing social and environmental factors.

I’m not endorsing any particular candidate for President, but I do encourage you to take a deep look at Bobby’s campaign, as he’s one of the only candidates I’m aware of who recognizes how making Americans healthier will fix so many of the issues we are facing today. I hope you’ll tune in.

Wishing you health and happiness,

Thanks for including this Eric, it would be nice to see someone that could actually re-energize the 2024 election with an alternative to what we’ve had for eight years now. I believe there are a few that can if we just keep giving them coverage here. Perhaps that is a better option to reviewing the failures of actions in the past.
