Sometimes we may feel o.k. about ourselves but we come into contact with others that have quite different values and we have to recognize that our own views may be quite different.

I wonder if we should let ourselves be so affected by that?

It most cases no. But it is important to realize someone else may have a totally different take on things. They may even feel that we are trying to harm them because of their different values.
