The plan may appear to neatly sidestep the issue that some claim lies behind Russia's Ukraine invasion: Preventing the eastward expansion of NATO.
Critics, however, say that such a deal could further embolden Putin and ignores the fact that the Russian president's real motive is imperialist conquest.
In my view, both parties are interested to a peace negotiations. It may start with a temporary cease-fire. Ukraine will have surely to renounce to NATO and to some territories. Putin will tout it as an incredible victory, whereas it has been a sound defeat since the prime purpose was to conquer all of Ukraine.
Could such a deal embolden Putin? All is possible, but an attempt is an attempt. Mr. Trump now is very respected from Putin, especially so after his legendary escape from the 1st assassination attempt. His diplomats will have to deliver and effective stick-and-carrot package.
