This thread is directed to anyone interested in health but specifically mccoy, since I consider him to be the most informed at research and knowledge of health concerns, in regards to food on this site. I want to know what you think of this man and his claims about health?

Dr. Gundry is a cardiologist who turned to diet influencer. I would not advise to follow his suggestions, since there are far better sources.

In his first book, the plant paradox,  he basically suggested not to eat many plant-derived foods since they contain natural toxics such as lectins and others. This is a wrong sphere of thought, for many reasons, and the initial error is that some people are actually made sick by these vegetable compounds. The majority though si made healthier by the same compounds.

In his successive books he perhaps evolved some of his ideas for the better.

Again, some people are far more into God's sphere of thought of healthy nutrition.

To the above I would like to add, this field is made complex by the individual variability in basic genetic and epigenetic parameters which influence metabolic mechanisms, plus all other paths related to immunity, geroprotection, resilience and so on.

God has created an hypercomplex world, which cannot be exactly depicted by just a few rules.

The above being said, for most people the state of the art of nutrition research has shown that a diet similar to that suggested by SRF in its lessons (the Raja Yoga diet) is the best in keeping reasonably healthy. Lifestyle is also very important, like proper exercise, proper sleep and stress management (of which meditation is a strong part).

Nutrition-wise, the most general rules which are a big part of god's sphere of though in this field are summarized by the popular, concise words of Michale Pollan: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

Refinements of the above rules are of course possible in various degrees, but the refinements need to be individualized and only in part can be generalized.

I’m happy to hear you feel this way. It just seemed somewhat high pressured and more like an advertisement which recommended the abandonment of some of my favorite foods and those that I thought to be healthy like tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes and whole wheat bread. I would have to have more evidence then just hearsay to change diet so radically.

When someone tells me I can eat anything I want just avoid some foods that you have been told were healthy by many of the authorities we have followed…. and to leave meat  products and all fish products in your diet it runs contrary to every eastern monastery I’ve been at all my life. He has quite unusual ‘theories’ about the invasion of the digestive track that seemed at least plausible I wonder if some diets like this are effective for some people. With my observation of people who eat meat and pork regularly it seems unlikely. And I wonder about the restlessness that for instance Paramahansa Yogananda has told us multiple times; it makes meditation and calming the mind’s activities very challenging. Not to speak of the environmental impact posed by heavily meat consuming nations. I often wonder if such diets are in part responsible for the lingering affects of the darkest Kali Yuga we were passing through about 500 years ago? I know people will rationalize the use of anything and everything to satisfy their lust and greed for deleterious substances and foods.

Steve, there are a few people afflicted by autoimmune response who are made sick by some plant-derived compounds. What is usually done in these predicaments, is the so-called elimination procedure, people fall back initially on a pure carnivorous diet, then they start adding vegetable food a little at a time. they are just a minority though, not everyone as Dr. Gundry would like to make us believe.

Many people fall into the pitfall of the wrong sphere of thought, adopting a carnivorous diet because they say they cannot tolerate plant foods, but they are usually fooling themselves, sometimes their desire for steak. And they are being influenced by internet influencers, who sometimes make big profits supporting this sphere of thought.

Fish is considered healthy by modern nutrition research, although it is not a suggested food for spiritual aspirants.

The suggested foods for meditation and spiritual evolution are those falling into the sattvic, sometimes rajasic categories, mentioned in Sri Yukteswar's 'The holy science' and in the SRF lessons.

Further refinements of this diet can be done to optimize individual requirements.

The most basic rule though is not to overindulge in food, even though rajasic, since this disrupts the ability to meditate and leads to unhealthy conditions.
