Where is this happening?

Most of the restrictions enacted this school year have been passed by Republican-controlled legislatures in Texas, Florida, Missouri, Utah, and South Carolina. Spurred by conservative groups such as Moms for Liberty, a two-year-old organization that has helped propel hundreds of like-minded candidates onto school boards, these legislatures have passed laws with broad restrictions on topics they deem inappropriate. The mere presence of LGBTQ people in a book can be enough to merit the label "obscene." In Florida and several other states, all books must be screened by official censors before they are deemed acceptable, with wholesale bans on references to sex, race, and gender identity, regardless of context. In Missouri, a new law banning books containing "explicit sexual material" led school districts to junk art history textbooks and nonfiction accounts of the Holocaust. In Texas, which had more book bannings than any other state last year, a bill currently under consideration would ban textbooks that portray U.S. history in anything but a "positive" light. In Florida, new laws pushed by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) have tied educators in knots and emptied some school library shelves.

“Something monstrous is taking shape in America. Formally, it exhibits the synergy of state and corporate power in service of a tribal zeal that is the hallmark of fascism. Yet anyone who spends time in America and is not a brainwashed zealot can tell that it is not a fascist country. What is coming into being is a new form of government and social organization that is as different from mid-twentieth century liberal democracy as the early American republic was from the British monarchism that it grew out of and eventually supplanted. A state organized on the principle that it exists to protect the sovereign rights of individuals, is being replaced by a digital leviathan that wields power through opaque algorithms and the manipulation of digital swarms. It resembles the Chinese system of social credit and one-party state control, and yet that, too, misses the distinctively American and providential character of the control system.” ~RFK JR

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds on Friday signed a bill to prohibit students from kindergarten through grade six in the state from being provided instruction related to gender identity and sexual orientation.

The legislation, Senate File 496, also has several other provisions to restrict age-inappropriate instruction and give parents and guardians more ways to oversee and guide their child’s education with regard to these issues.

This includes banning any books that contain “descriptions or visual depictions of a sex act” from libraries and from classroom instruction. However, religious texts will be exempted.

I'm all for this! I've seen the book that probably put this into motion- teaching little boys how to give blow jobs to other little boys. Hell no. Keep that crap away from the children.

Way to go Iowa!

This is my personal experience Eric. As a adolescent I was told you must stand up in the morning and recite the pledge of allegiance. Here it is;

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

There are some different versions as this one that I was told to recite at the threat of being sent to the principals office;

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America , one nation, under God,  indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Since I did not and still do not believe that indoctrination is true. Liberty and justice for all? What a laugh.

I resent the indoctrination of the far right into brain washing kids into a Christian life style that does not incorporate the teachings of other spiritual traditions. And unfortunately most right wing Christians still believe that anything coming out of the east is heresy and blasphemous.

I was determined to follow my own path but right wing America expelled me from school because my hair was too long and I was warned that we all have to stand and say the pledge of allegiance. Militant uniformity is the law for these people and persistent conformity. I remember a girl friend being thrown out of school for wearing jeans.

It’s good to hear both sides of a story before we make a final evaluation.  For instance I found no use for football and basketball when I was forced into these sports. Do you think the Christian run schools would accept yoga instead? No yoga was considered heathen.

Do you really believe we are going to get a balanced education with the likes of DiSantis and your Texan governor Abbot manipulating school classes to reflect Christian beliefs? Would I have learned even one thing about Buddhism or Hinduism in these kind of schools representing their beliefs? I have been told all my younger life by Christians that meditation is demonic. Do you think that supports a good educational system??!

In DeSantis's Florida, teachers can be fired for acknowledging the existence of LGBTQ people. Migrants are put on buses to random destinations, used as political pawns. Women are denied abortion care even when their pregnancy isn't viable. This is not what it looks like to love your neighbor. This is hypocrisy and doesn’t even reflect true Christian values.
