I'm realizing the same thing. And there's nothing wrong with taking things personal if it means performing right action.

What right action means to one may not mean the same to another. But I feel this,

you can't run to meditation just to escape your troubles and avoid responsibility for your own actions. It's neglectful and bound to catch up to you in some fashion or another.

The other thing I see is,

Everyone considered friend worthy who wants to open up to the other feels it prudent to share their wisdom- how they got where they did, and somewhere in between what is said and what is received- an ego will take things personal, to the extent that it might get defensive by the wisdom shared from others.

For example, I am at a time in my life where rest is crucial. And a friend stopped by to tell me he can't afford to rest, that right now he's at a time in his life where it's crucial for him to do x, y and z. We are on opposite ends of reality. Both of us are experiencing reality. But it was my ego that took things personal when he considered rest as something unhelpful, disinteresting, etc. When I take rest right now as equally important as exercise.

Neither person is wrong, but it is an error to think the other person wrong(to the extent we must force our views upon them, or think our beliefs are being challenged)- even if we're representing difference faces of the coin, we're still the coin.
