As a geologist, I'm not surprised since Turkey is one of the most seismically hazardous areas in the world, with very strong quakes a not uncommon possibility.

On top of it, some pretty recent buildings collapsed like towers of cards. AFAIK, the Turkish authorities are investigating the constructors. Seismic laws are pretty stringent in that country and recent buildings should have not crumbled down like that.
