My idea about the need of exercises (through experience), is that the exercises expand your consciousness, as the purpose is to evolve to cosmic consciousness.
The exercises are a kind of safety, a protection. If you are not ready and you experience some higher level you can have serious mental problems. The small ego goes in panic because it cannot handle the experience. It is because the higher you go the more energy is evolved. If you cross a frontier in yourself a lot of energy comes free and if you are not ready to lead this in the right channels you can have for example fearattackts or simular.

You cannot jump to the top of the stair, you have to go step by step. Therefore there are the exercises before you really can meditate. We wake up little by little.
