Just wondering,  in both the SRF and the Amma meditation techniques, if it is ok to ask this here ..... why do both begin their meditations with exercises ?

Does this have something to do with limbering up so one can sit for long periods of time ? or does it somehow have a connection to relaxing the body, which then somehow helps the mind to focus on the meditation ?

The SRF energization exercises help get the 'knots' out of the body so the body is more relaxed and prepared for meditation. The Hong Sau technique is like a lazer to focus the mind. The om technique obsorbs the consciousness. These basic meditation techniques are offered in the first 30 SRF lessons. You can get them in the mail and you do not even have to go to church if you don't care to. They are available at: www.yogananda.org
