I suppose I was as ‘crafty as a crow’ Im getting some of my musical equipment back that some so called friends had in their house. When I was putting the equipment in the trailer and car a large crow looked at me from high up in an empty tree and squawked away in the unseasonably warm winter sky.

"Crafty as a crow" means clever, cunning, and skillful at finding solutions or getting what they want, often using intelligence and subtle methods, reflecting the real-life intelligence of crows known for tool use (like making hooks from twigs), problem-solving (dropping nuts in traffic), and complex social behaviors like holding grudges and recognizing faces. It highlights their sharp intellect, adaptability, and sometimes deceptive, trickster-like qualities seen in folklore.
Key aspects of crow craftiness:
Tool Use: Crows create and use tools, like shaping twigs to fish for insects, a behavior once thought unique to humans.
Problem Solving: They drop nuts on roads for cars to crack, waiting for crosswalk lights to ensure safety, showing planning.
Deception & Strategy: They distract other animals to steal food or follow predators to scavenge, demonstrating complex tactics.
Memory & Grudges: Crows remember faces, especially mean ones, and pass this knowledge to others, holding grudges for generations.
In folklore & symbolism:
Trickster Figures: Crows often appear as mischievous tricksters in myths, similar to coyotes in Native American stories.
Wisdom & Omens: They are linked to wisdom (like Odin's ravens) but also seen as messengers of death or fate in other traditions.
Essentially, calling someone "crafty as a crow" praises their sharp, resourceful intelligence, especially when they outsmart situations or others.
