Why do we need religion?

Possibly because everyone is on a different spiritual level or learning/understanding.

It works for some because that's where they're at.

If for example someone is into Jehovah Witness, if that leads to God eventually, then it worked for them.

Just an opinion.

Yes 👍 religion can only reflect the attitudes and consciousness of those who practice it. It could be much more beneficial to the 🌎 if the people who often claim to adhere to it were not so 😢 cruel to others.
