Having spiritual friends are as Paramahansa Yogananda said; they are 'soul soldiers' from the past who come to aid us in times of trouble and need. Without such presences sometimes we may go off the deep end and react in very unspiritual ways towards other people by treating them as they may have wrongly treated us. Then again, some of these difficulties we have with others may possibly be to remind us what friends and fortunate circumstances we do have so we are grateful and appreciative of their presences. Often i am reminded of the help that flows from a Guru and spiritual friends.

Yogananda had a conversation with Sri Yukteswar that was related in the Autobiography of a Yogi in which they agreed to help one another if one of them should fall. This is the true meaning of spiritual friendship. We are there to help one another and remind each other of how far we have come and where we are traveling when we loose are way.

"I give you my unconditional love."

Precious words! A quarter-century elapsed before I had another auricular proof of his love. His lips were strange to ardor; silence became his oceanic heart.

"Will you give me the same unconditional love?" He gazed at me with childlike trust.

"I will love you eternally, Gurudeva!"

"Ordinary love is selfish, darkly rooted in desires and satisfactions. Divine love is without condition, without boundary, without change. The flux of the human heart is gone forever at the transfixing touch of pure love." He added humbly, "If ever you find me falling from a state of God-realization, please promise to put my head on your lap and help to bring me back to the Cosmic Beloved we both worship." Last paragraph quote~ Sri Yukteswar from the Autobiography of a Yogi
