CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Trump’s biggest nemesis in the White House press pool, sat down with Jon Stewart to discuss the shameful insults that Collins had to weather at the White House Correspondents Dinner from the president of the United States – and showed she wasn’t shook in the slightest by them.

“Is there, in your mind, that his fascination with you to some extent, that you don't react and bend the knee, is some of what he's provoking and trolling and becoming more and more frustrated that you're just staying professional to what you want to do?” asked Stewart.

“I'm not sure. I can't get it to his head,” replied Collins. “You know, I've had the same model the entire time I've covered him and I've treated it the same way.”

“I've never gotten into back and forth with him. I've always brought it back to the question. I think he does surround himself with people who praise him or laugh at his jokes. And when he's confronted with someone who is asking a challenging question or a critical question of his policy or strategy in the Iran war, ah I think he doesn't like it, and he lashes out over it.”

“There have been moments where I've gone into the Oval Office when I'm on behalf of the TV pool and I haven't even asked a question yet, and he starts criticizing me. So it's not even always just about the questions. Sometimes it's just my presence in the room.”

“But again, I really think it's, I really do think it's important. Is this real life? Like this is crazy. But I really do think it's important in that moment. It really isn't about me because I do think my colleagues at CNN, my colleagues in the press corps, do a good job of trying to ask tough questions, doing good reporting. You don't have to smile while you're doing that, and I think that's what's important.”

Well said. Trump’s insecurities drive him to lash out and throw tantrums and try to get under the skin of people that bother him, and the most powerful thing you can do in the face of that is make sure he knows it doesn’t work.

That feeling of powerlessness drives Trump absolutely bonkers.

Working in the White House press corps with a madman like Trump forces you to walk a very tight rope – push him too hard and he’ll just throw you out – but Collins does an incredible job of threading the needle, asking the hard questions that need to be answered, and standing strong in the face of relentless bullying.
