Antares, also known as α Scorpii, is the brightest star in the constellation of Scorpius. It’s often referred to as “the heart of the scorpion.” When viewed with the naked eye, Antares appears distinctly reddish and is a slow irregular variable star, ranging in brightness from an apparent visual magnitude of +0.6 down to +1.6. It’s approximately 170 parsecs (550 light-years) from Earth and is located at the rim of the Upper Scorpius subgroup, illuminating the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex in its foreground12. In the Northern Hemisphere, Antares is visible south of 63° north latitude, while in the Southern Hemisphere, it rises high in the sky and is circumpolar from about 63° south latitude2. 🌟
