What is a runner’s high?

A runner’s high is a brief, deeply relaxing state of euphoria. Euphoria is a sense of extreme joy or delight.

In this case, it occurs after intense or lengthy exercise. Often, people who experience a runner’s high also report feeling less anxiety and pain immediately after their run.

Not everyone who runs or exercises intensely will get a runner’s high, however. It’s difficult to measure “euphoria” because the experience is subjective. But what we do know is that it’s likely rare.

Plus, you may need to run for several miles at a time to reach the point where a runner’s high could occur. For many people, this distance might not be easy or possible.

So if you complete a lengthy jog and you don’t feel like you could begin your race again, you’re probably not alone. But good for you for taking that healthy run anyway.

How your body and brain respond to running

A runner’s high isn’t the only possible benefit of running or exercising. Indeed, there are several physical benefits caused by the chemicals released when you’re running, and they’re not all related to your cardiovascular system.

Running and aerobic exercise release a flood of endorphins into your blood. Endorphins are often called the “feel-good” chemicals because they produce feelings of happiness and pleasure.

They also help you feel less pain while you’re running. That can act as a natural pain reliever, helping you endure longer periods of exercise.

For decades, scientists believed endorphins were responsible for a runner’s high. It makes sense — they do have a great deal of beneficial effects.

But in recent years, research has revealed that endorphins may not have much to do with it after all. Instead, new research points to another type of molecule: endocannabinoids.

These molecules act on your endocannabinoid system. This is the same system that’s affected by tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active compound in cannabis.

Like endorphins, exercise releases endocannabinoids into the bloodstream. If you feel euphoric or deeply relaxed after a run, these molecules may be the responsible party.

Anyhow I had this experience (see above thread description) a few times, when I was about 30 years of age and ran up to 12 miles in the freezing cold of January in Michigan. Today I started getting pessimistic about my ability and energy to get out in what feels like 14 degrees weather but I assured myself that if I remained stagnant all winter I would gain unacceptable weight. So I got out and jogged and meditated awhile in the snowing weather. I surprised myself by jogging up a steep hill at the end and feeling with delight the soft snow beneath my 🥾 boots, making my last stretch more delightful then what at times, in the summer, seemed like drudgery in the heat.

Today, my mind was bombarded with thoughts I didn't want to have. So much so, it was my straining my nervous system. I have discovered a new practice to help narrow awareness into a single point. That is, I attempt to take 10 inhalations and exhalations, focusing on nothing else but the experience of the breath. If my mind begins to drift, and I become engaged in other thoughts, I start over until 10 uninterrupted breaths are made.

I went for a jog in nature and thought...

As we are not yet capable as a Master, we are codependent on Earth as 3D incarnate. It means we must utilize our will in this playground in order to take control of the direction of our perceptions and attitudes. So this practice, jogging and breathing, meditating and narrowing my thoughts, was a way to utilize material world to shape interior world to reflect the desired state of consciousness.

I am noticing the energies are out of whack, both within and without. I saw a homeless woman cussing and ranting to nobody at the top of a hill. And then I saw a young father teaching his son to fish. Noticing both dynamics was an interesting experience.

I also spotted a near 4 ft tall gray crane in the bayou. He was majestic.

Since shaving my head people stare with uncertainty. A simple smile and wave usually offsets, since I find myself staring right back.

I often practice a mantra when jogging 🏃‍♂️ inhale - hong exhale - Sau or inhale - Om exhale - Ma ….it helps my spiritual practice as well. Eric … Thought I’d put your experience with jogging here as well, to read it over again.
