At one time I questioned whether the sound I heard practicing the om technique may have been just a natural sound that for instance is heard when you put your ear up to a sea shell, listen to the ocean, or hear the sound of the wind blowing through the trees in a mountain forest. But later,, i found that my experiences in practicing the om technique ( given for instance in the SRF lessons) were unique that others could hear also but that were not nature sounds, although spirit does emulate the sound of om in natural sounds. I drew my conclusions from a couple experiences that I had. One is that I was in a desert driving one night. I stopped and got out of the car and there was no wind or trees anywhere to be seen. Then out of the silence came the sound of om. Quite apart from any natural phenomena. At times one can also hear om in practicing the om technique. However it becomes apparent that the sound is louder or quieter at different times of practice. It is not always haphazard. You can often recognize that it becomes louder to the awareness when there is less thoughts taking place. And on the times you find yourself thinking about it, the sound fades. This is again because meditation is not thought but rather consciousness.
