Russian Men Flee to Alaska Across Bering Strait to Escape Draft for War in Ukraine

Roughly 30,000 Russians have fled to the U.S. and have been taken into custody by immigration authorities at U.S. ports and along the country’s land borders in the run-up to and after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to CBP arrest data. Nearly all of those people have been allowed to remain in the U.S. to pursue asylum cases or seek other legal protections, a process that can take years to complete.
