Paramahansa Yogananda explains how the powerful technique of Kriya Yoga redirects energy away from the senses and back into the spine.

In man where the life energy flows, there the consciousness follows. The life current flowing downward from the brain carries the mind to the senses and to identify with the physical body and the domain of entangling matter.  By  the outward flow of prana to the senses of touch, sight, hearing, taste, and smell, they exert a magnetism of attachment to matter that habitually draws the consciousness outward, keeping one immersed in material consciousness and material desires. But through practice of the Kriya technique, the magnetism of sensory objects is over come by the building up of a stronger magnet in spine. P.Y.

For me personally there really has been no incentive to practice meditation until I recognized what meditation and particularly Kriya was doing for me. Until someone finds a technique to draw the consciousness away from the restlessness of the senses and the attachments of the body and mind it is difficult to have a method for metaphysical, psychic and transcendental experiences to occur for us.
