Many Christians, if not most, believe that Jesus was the only son of God but in fact Saint John said in 1:12 of the Bible:

“But as many as received him, to them gave he the power to become the sons of God even to them that  believe in his name”

St John 1:12

I find it more important to probe into a persons understanding by asking for clarification, explanation and even specific definitions when they say that. Sometimes what they believe and what we think they believe are different. Words are easy to misconstrue. Humans(not one particular religion over the other) can easily become preoccupied with a messenger over the message- essentially it is still the presence and message they are drawn to. It is difficult to articulate your beliefs if you aren't talking about it or questioning them. Because I know you feel to have been persecuted by Christians I believe your categorizing people into this- 'many if not most' kind of way is tinged with a little bias.
Truly the culprit you are trying to describe is intolerance, which we know is not limited to any one religion but in fact a phenomenon of its own- in religion, in society, in the house hold...

Oh no! The sisters of the inquisition. Yea! The monster that waited in my room as a kid until the lights were out, then proceeded in doing his "business”. You know the type. Now as an adult I just have to make sure I don’t leave my keys and credit card out in the open! Too many boogie men. Leave your nite lite on. It may afford the protection you need. 😃  and put a sign in your front yard; ⚠️ caution psychic dog known to bite for evil 😈 intent!
