Karma in Relationships

How can we determine that we are finally being absolved of karma we share with difficult friends and/or lovers? Karma is being extinguished and ultimately finished with others when we have an indifference or rather complacency about their actions. Perhaps we recognize that the selfishness they have exhibited out weighs the benefits we once enjoyed in the relationship. So we are able to be detached from their inactions or actions; what ever the case may be.
