Start at 2:40 for talk on practicing japa / mantra and Amma’s talk on being a witness of the mind. Listen on she will speak also. Be patient she speaks with English subtitles after a bit for those having difficulty understanding interpreters as I have myself!

“Actions are enjoyable only if the mind enjoys them... the mind alone is the cause of joy and sorrow....with this understanding we can become a witness.”

~ Amma

‘As a child Amma would chant a mantra with each step. If she forgot, she would take a step back, chant the mantra and  begin again.’

Lately I have watched carefully the actions of those around me and in the world, and most importantly the thoughts that occur to myself; in my own mind. There is also much talk of practicing the presence; that is with a mantra.

Amma speaks in much detail here about witness consciousness. A step beyond the mind, where all sorrows and joys arise. Our mind is the cause of all experiences. Our life is conditioned by what others say. If others praise us, we feel overjoyed. If others criticize us we feel angry and sad. We need to understand the mind. When problems arise, we also need to turn within and understand our limitations.

Every action has a result, then why not here? Personal experiences with these great ideals provide much insight.

I hope this video unfolds your consciousness of joy as it has mine and back to the practice of meditation.

Steve, Practicing the presence is easy to say, harder to do. I find I tend to forget about this practice while overwhelmed by daily worldly duties.
Do you have a specific strategy to take the mind back to practicing?

Steve, yes, I was thinking about it just yesterday. The long game. One incarnation is just one tiny amount of the evolutionary process we go through in our human lives.

It is probably so that only highly evolved ones achieve a stable state of God-awareness, sometimes even ultra-evolved souls may skip an incarnation or two and go without uplifting spiritual experiences.

It may also be that the living presence of the guru may be necessary to overcome karmic states of restlessness which prevent us to experience superconscious states in a specific incarnation.

Anyway, again, it is a long game, what we sow remains in the ground and we are going to reap eventually the result of our efforts.
