I think there is substance, and that meaning and experience you extract from the play is uniquely yours.
I do not have any challenges with other peoples views till they affect mine. Yesterday I met a man who truly seemed to believe the earth is flat and when you get to the North Pole that’s it. You are not allowed to go further. He believes the Sun and Moon are not thousands and millions of miles away. It’s all a hoax. Well let him believe as he likes. The problem is when people see me differently than I am and accuse me of things I am not. They see substance where it is only perception. These people can be dangerous and I suppose we all have that characteristic to some extent. To this extent others extract meaning from the players in the action that is uniquely their own and believe what they extract. But it is only their imagination that creates their story. They can for instance, drive by you and call the cops because you are driving slow and they see you are drinking. When in reality they are driving way over the speed limit and you may be in the way to them. I know I have had it happen. Instead of stopping the speeder the cop stopped me.
The problems occur when other people find meaning in events that justifies their own meanness.
