I've better understood this to mean... the things we find distasteful in others mirrors our own capacities. Wanting forgiveness for our actions, knowing we are not those things- I think it is the same for others who at times cause us to feel averse by their actions or even their being. By getting closer to them we develop the heart quality compassion and have an opportunity to understand and conquer those feelings that cause separation and ignorance. It may even mean simply tolerating another, it can even be as small as praying for understanding, because doing so will open you up instead of place a wall.
