Sometimes people that have never meditated find it difficult to sleep because their minds are so wound up.
I would suggest watching the breath as in meditation and putting words like Om peace to the inhalation and exhalation of the breath. Saying this internally until we unwind and the consciousness relaxes enough to fall asleep. Sometimes it is necessary to sleep because we need to get up early the next morning but we can be so wound up we can not unwind to get our needed rest.

It could also be that sleep is disrupted, drinking alcohol disrupts your rest. What you eat, when you eat and just how much also affects sleep quality.
