Steve, a religion is important insofar as it is able to effectively channel and organize the spiritual energy of its devotees.
If the organization is able to promote specific teachings and if people get benefit from it then it is important.
Of course, the importance of a religious organization governs at the beginning of the spiritual practice, whereas later on individual practice governs, as you say.
