mccoy; i percieve you are rite on. But some people's lives are checkered with uniformity. The same  family, the same friend, the same spiritual forum, the same meditation technique, the same routine. Sometimes it takes thinking or jumping out of the box to take the next spiritual jump on the journey.

At one point in our spiritual development we are taught how to think in the box and follow all the rules but as we grow we find that the rules serve a purpose yet the rules themselves have their limitations and often confine us within a spiritual box when we are confronted with anomalies that do not fit literal translation nor conventional answers and solutions. At these times the discernment falls on the devotee rather than on outside sources.

I have seen and have had many lessons from the guru that have shown me that rules are made to be broken and are also relative to the situation and are not set in stone. They are helpful to follow. Yet many people make them ends rather than means to a goal. They are unable to see the forest for the trees.

The interesting phenomena of thinking as opposed to getting beyond thought is that the mind routinely thinks in a certain routine and uses circular reasoning to cognize the world around it. We do not have the capability to think out of the box of our own thought processes. This means unless we are challenged by the views of others or are able to see beyond our own thoughts we will be trapped in the labyrinth of our own thoughts and reflections. We must some how get out of our own minds and thoughts to understand the universe in a larger more expanded context in relation to the world we live in and in relation to others and a spiritually expansive view. In this sense if we r not careful we can very easily become psychological antiques.... not exploring anything except what we r familiar with and have become accustomed to. In this way we easily can fall into a spiritual stupor and mental rut.
