Maybe it's hard to tell a psychological necessity from a mere indulgence because we have indulged and created certain habits from one life to the next.

That's a logical reasoning.
Also, Yogananda Always warned against overindulgence. So I reckon that mere indulgence may be all right, as far as it isn't harmful to our spiritual evolution.
