The book of the dead speaks of the importance of the Guru to help the soul traverse various experiences of light after departure from this physical realm. And, the importance of holding on to such experiences and welcoming them instead of fearing them. These various lights are also explained and illustrated in the SRF lessons and most likely in other spiritual traditions and texts. But if one has not acquainted oneself in life, through the practice of meditation, with these lights, they can produce fear in the various bardo states after death and send the soul into a whirlpool of fear and despair. Asking for the guidance of a true guru will be a spiritual journey most welcome at this moment of leaving this life and the body.
