Regardless of environmental patterns, one consideration is of utmost importance.
Environment and patterns of environment are bound by the fabric of their substance. Sentient spiritualized beings expand largely beyond the scope of these Environmental factors -- in that Existence and Consciousness is not necessarily constrained by the fabric of the environmental goings on... (even though "it" exists within the formations of the environment. (Contained within/without, but not constrained by the structure).
iron filings are settled in an equillibrium within their internal magnetic structures, yet under the environmental influence of an external magnet, take on, and exhibit the nature of the external magnet. Yet when the environmental factor (magnet) moves, it's influence is no longer present, and the iron filings simply allow their natural and always present (although seemingly obscurred) state of "poise" and "internal equillibrium" to exhibit.
the key is that spiritualized being may observe the "exhibited" formation caused by the environment, yet like the iron filings, the spiritualized being may choose yet to remain in a state of internal equillibrium -- in Existence Consciousness Bliss... remaining focused and in "poise", all the while observing the exhibited nature of the external environment.

Environment does not equate Reaction or Intent.
understanding Environment may be a useful or limiting tool -- in that it permits observation of probable, possible, and potential manifestations and outcomes that may or not "exhibit".
Reaction - "Thought, Act, Deed" - enter into the mix to bring about formations of causality and effect. Yet these as well are simply part of the flow of Existence Consciousness Bliss.

so again we play via these symbols of words... may peace and poise settle upon our beings... arising into fulfillment of all yearnings - grand and mundane (in Her Divine flows).
These external magnets u speak of translate into environmental circumstances and people who enter our lives. As u say these environmental conditions allow us to observe probable, possible and potential manifestations. In our consciousness we some how project our own personal wishes and hopes for these outcomes which add to the mix of what we observe. We find that conditions and people do not add up to satisfying our personal hopes wishes and desires. They often have the tantalizing appearance of being able to but after a time we recognize that this appearance was only another mirage; somewhat like what one would see in a desert in the heat of being mesmerized. Ultimately we r turned back on ourselves with the recognition that our own personal desires have tainted what still our the true outcomes. When this recognition comes we r less likely to make choices that will not satisfy r perceived needs as opposed to an awakening to our real needs that r still in a state of growing recognition.
