sometimes what you perceive as the naked truth is simply your understanding. you may think your doing a service by telling your friend when really that understanding was meant for you- even if it means letting your friend be the example. sometimes it's best to say nothing, but to be there and nurture your friend when the time is right. in either case, speak what you feel and know that neither person is better for having impart anything- instead both are serving as active tools for progress in possibly, two completely different spectrum of reality.
