Just seeing this thread, nice photo.

Yea lots of things to eat right in the woods around here… Mushrooms, Trout Lilies and Wild Ramps. Added to the fact that if you are on a several day hiking and camping trip you can use a compact water filter to drink right out of the streams while for instance in the Manistee Forest.

Just been spending time understanding how to use various wild food and water sources for sustaining us…. When for instance we are going through difficult world times or seek to ‘go light’ on camping trips.

I too like prepping and would like to be able to forage on wild food. I tried oak nuts and, if properly prepared (boiled many times over) they ain't too bad and in the season you can have an almost unlimited source.

I tried dandelion and it's pretty good, although it requires some time to harvest enough. Berries too, although the wild variety is not very digestible (the blackberries around my house, for example).

Wild vegetables have phytochemical compounds (often of the polyphenols group) which can be pretty healthy, they tend to be more concentrated than the domestic varieties.  The phenomenon of xenohormesis is pretty interesting and convincing.

The best for sustenance is of ocurse to learn some basic gardening skills, growing the simplest vegetables to grow, in all seasons.

Do you wash these before eating? Or can you eat them straight from the ground?

Thank you  Smiley

I wash them if there is a stream nearby, otherwise just wipe them off.
