I find the cross-legged posture on the floor much more conducive to calm in meditation. I don't know why.

After about 20-30 years of meditation though my knees started to ache so I had to fall back on the sitting-on-chair posture.

Now, after about 44 years of practice I find I have nearly no time to meditate, but  I'm enjoying again the cross-legged posture with the little I can do. It's powerful.

Also, as Steve says, a pretty high cushion or a hill on the ground or whatsoever keeps your butt more elevated than the feet, I've always found it necessary.
