3. May help with weight loss

Ginger may play a role in weight loss, according to studies conducted in humans and animals.

A 2019 literature review concluded that ginger supplementation significantly reduced body weight, the waist-hip ratio, and the hip ratio in people with overweight or obesity (10Trusted Source).

A 2016 study of 80 women with obesity found that ginger could also help reduce body mass index (BMI) and blood insulin levels. High blood insulin levels are associated with obesity.

Study participants received relatively high daily doses — 2 grams — of ginger powder for 12 weeks (11, 12).

A 2019 literature review of functional foods also concluded that ginger had a very positive effect on obesity and weight loss. However, additional studies are needed (13).

The evidence in favor of ginger’s role in helping prevent obesity is stronger in animal studies.

Rats and mice who consumed ginger water or ginger extract consistently saw decreases in their body weight, even in instances where they’d also been fed high fat diets (14Trusted Source, 15, 16).

Ginger’s ability to influence weight loss may be related to certain mechanisms, such as its potential to help increase the number of calories burned or reduce inflammation (13, 16).

SUMMARY
According to studies in animals and humans, ginger may help improve weight-related measurements. These include body weight and the waist-hip ratio.

Ginger has a very long history of use in various forms of traditional and alternative medicine. It’s been used to aid digestion, reduce nausea, and help fight the flu and common cold, to name a few of its purposes.

The unique fragrance and flavor of ginger come from its natural oils, the most important of which is gingerol.

Gingerol is the main bioactive compound in ginger. It’s responsible for much of ginger’s medicinal properties.

Gingerol has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, according to research. For instance, it may help reduce oxidative stress, which is the result of having an excess amount of free radicals in the body (1Trusted Source, 2Trusted Source

Curcumin is another spice which constitutes a superfood for its multiple benefits in health and longevity.

Your post has reminded me to buy some ginger tomorrow, it's a very tasty addition to dishes of vegetables, and together with curcumin and black pepper it constitutes a powerful preventive medicine.

I’ll have to look that one up. I know I have cumin here in the house.

SUMMARY
Ginger is high in gingerol, a substance with potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

I am sorry but I was thinking about turmeric, the root, instead, I wrote curcumin, which is the main active principle of turmeric.

Different from cumin which is another spice with useful phytonutrients like all other spices.

Sometimes curcumin, the active principle of turmeric, is sold in the form of a supplement. Best is to eat the turmeric root both raw and cooked, also the powder is good.

I buy both cumin and turmeric … also ginger. All these fresh; if I have the money or in powder form. All these spices are so good for u, and to think we just had pepper and salt as kids! I’ve heard black pepper isn’t so good anyway so now I use more cayenne and too much salt isn’t either so I use more sea salt.

AFAIK, black pepper is good and must be taken together with turmeric/curcumin to inhibit glucuronidation, that is, a fast metabolic disruption of curcumin.

Also, cited by NIH:

Quote
Many physiological effects of black pepper, its extracts, or its major active principle, piperine, have been reported in recent decades. Dietary piperine, by favorably stimulating the digestive enzymes of pancreas, enhances the digestive capacity and significantly reduces the gastrointestinal food transit time.

Lucca your report in the last post is promising to me since I really enjoyed pepper as a kid, but was told as a teenager, by health enthusiasts and health store employees, that it can be responsible for irritating the inner walls of the stomach and they we’re promoting cayenne pepper in its place. I know that cayenne pepper has a lot of vitamin c in it. I hope now that black peeper can be taken off the list of ‘harmful’ foods as I have abstained from it now for decades, when I really desired it on for instance eggs or tomatoes.

It is amazing 🤩 how so many of our preconceived notions of food and reality in general need constant revisions and alternations as this life reveals more and more of its secrets to us daily through friends and ‘foes’.

Yes, black pepper used to have a bad rep here as well, I wonder why, actually cayenne pepper can be far more irritating than black pepper to the stomach. Of course, we talk in moderation, but I remember occasionally I have been nibbling pepper grains in nontrivial amounts.

All spices seem to be good, having some specific beneficial molecules. Turmeric seems to have so many beneficial effects that it is hard to count them.
