Dharma in the language of the Hindus means religion, but the literal meaning of this word is duty. It suggests that one's relation to every person in the world is one's religion; and the more conscientiously one follows it, the more keen one proves in following one's religion. To keep the secret of our friend, our acquaintance, even of someone with whom for a time one has been vexed, is the most sacred obligation. The one who thus realizes his religion would never consider it right to tell another of any harm or hurt he has received from his friend. It is in this way that self-denial is learned; not always by fasting and retiring into the wilderness. ... The one who knows what the relation of friendship is between one soul and another, the tenderness of that connection, its delicacy, its beauty, and its sacredness, that one can enjoy life in its fullness, for he is living; and in this manner he must some day communicate with God. For it is the same bridge that connects two souls in the world, which, once built, becomes the path to God.

Dharma means “those immutable principles of self-discipline and write action that protect man permanently from the threefold suffering of physical disease, mental unhappiness and spiritual ignorance.” The discovery and application of these principles, which is the purpose of religion, have not yet been considered seriously by western scientist as a subject for a lifelong research and practical scientific study. Yet such a study would reveal the origin and purpose of human life on earth. In India great yogis have discovered through their religious experimentation the practical means of destroying by the roots the three - - fold suffering of man- - body, mind, and soul - - so that there is no possibility of recurrence.

Dharma;

What is to be enacted and what is to be done. And what is to be avoided and not done, and the actions or inactions that lead to a compassionate state of being. The entire body of Sanskrit literature has 99% of its contents dedicated to dharma. Value added action.

Swami Vidyadhishananda

Swami helps us recognize our dharma! I have found that without an understanding of dharma life can be very confusing and we can become bewildered at some of the events that happen to us. But with an understanding of dharma we can roll with the changes much easier and make the adjustments necessary to a changing motion picture around us.

At some point in our many lives we cone to the recognition that there is more than one way to be taken care of, and when that realization comes to us…we welcome the sharing some are willing to give us and recognize that others may expect much more than we bargained for when having the desire to be taken care of.

It gives us comfort to think and experience that someone or something is orchestrating our life to a higher purpose and understanding. Following and knowing our dharma gives us that experience. We begin to see patterns emerge in our life and find ourselves in the right place, with the right people and at the right time when we release our will more and more into the arms of the divine. Meditation and ultimately a true Guru or true Master will help organize our life better for us than we are able to do ourselves in this huge universe we face. And in the timeless progression of the soul towards its eventual realization and enlightenment.

It takes patience and time to recognize that even the events and the people who come into our lives and leave them for a time seem incongruous to are experience of spiritual unfoldment, are just what we might need for the time we are experiencing such phenomena.
