Identifying Ego

It has come to my awareness more and more over the years of this life that we are constantly experiencing and dealing with the ego of other people in our relationship with the world. How much we should express our own views is often tempered by the threat we are perceived to be by others in our outlooks and actions. When others perceive us as a threat they may make accusations based on egotistical attitudes because they feel as though they are justified in their actions.

In fact in many cases ego is the cause of war and insubstantial accusations that lead to suppression of the truth. There are many people today who are in prison and paying penalties for crimes they did not commit because of the perception of others based on their egotistical attitudes. Sometimes it is better to be alone in our spiritual journey then to give in to the ego demands and behavior treatment of other people who are unwilling to have a relationship unless on their terms.

After years of meditation we can recognize ego in others and gain an increasing confidence in our intuition on such matters and assessments. I encourage others to explore meditation as a means of observing the ego of ourselves and others and gaining conscious awareness of the motivations of ourselves and others.  Though admittedly it is not as easy to do so in ourselves. In that sense we are fortunate to find humble and unassuming service oriented people that exemplify our lifestyle aims for an enlightened and spiritual existence.

I think people have their own perceptions about relationships and the ownership and interests that come with those relationships. Most of it is ego and the identification we and others have towards the direction and importance we see as our rights in the involvement we have with others.

Hey everyone I’ve decided to ‘lock myself out’ on this topic. Only I can effectively talk about ego. I’m sure you all understand. You have your own areas of expertise. For example; Eric and SI both are experts on their own subjects. Eric on dreams and SiI on photos…and I’m an expert on ego. I mean after all I’ve had enough of IT to know about IT right? I can keep my tongue 👅 in my cheek if necessary about MY topic. I even have to describe IT IT with the same word twice to show my expertise. Post any photo you got. But not on this thread. I’ve seen that look on convicts. ITS a commentary that just won’t work here. Let me keep my dreams in my own journal and big head of photos with anything you got with no further ado about any of IT. Anything you have to say would be superfluous.

Dude, you guys sure are off in your perceptions, and you shouldn't be.

I am no expert on photos. I post photos to a forum. That's it. They are not mine.

Actually, to set the record straight, I am not an expert in anything.

While it is more difficult to identify ego going rampant in ourselves. It is easier to identify it in others. I have a lot recently by observing’friends’ who have been making mountains out of molehills.

I think the world has got a big dose of ego recently in so called leaders. Introspection is so much apart of spiritual understanding. People unable to accept any kind of information about them without reacting negatively or by having to retaliate in some fashion are overly sensitive and often have egoitis.

Being around people who have ego issues that are, after a while, quite apparent can be very draining on our spirit. Especially if we are spending time with people who are attempting to resolve their own ego with introspection, self awareness and meditation. Because they are attempting to improve, while others feel justified in their behaviors and actions.

I understand that there is also a lot of ego in people that holds back there psychic and spiritual evolution. But like other people who have some degree of awareness of ego and problems it causes themselves, it's much more difficult to see ourselves like others do. There has to be a reason people have confrontational experiences and it can't all be the other guy. I've noticed that people like Amma can see the big show clearly and doesn't get lost in the petty side shows. The dramas that ego manifests. She is able to peel away the layers and get straight to the fruit.

Hang On to Your Ego

I know so many people
Who think they can do it alone
They isolate their heads
And stay in the safety zone
But what can you tell them?
What can you say that won't make them defensive?
So...
Hang on to your ego
Hang on, but I know that you're gonna lose the fight
They come on like they're peaceful
But inside they're so uptight
They trip through the day
And waste all their thoughts at night
But how can I say it?
How can I come on when I know I'm guilty?
So...
Hang on to your ego
Hang on, but I know that you're gonna lose the fight
And how can I say it?
How can I come on when I know I'm guilty?
Hang on to your ego
Hang on, but I know that you're gonna lose the fight
Hang on to your ego
Hang on, but I know that you're gonna lose the fight
Hang on to your ego
Hang on, but I know that you're gonna lose the fight

Have really noticed how friends can take things very personal when they were not even meant that way. Sometimes we have to make decisions that are best for our own spiritual evolution that affect friends very negatively. It is not that we ‘judge’ them but that we must make decisions for ourselves when opportunities that help those with our similar interests give us and share with us appear. We can still be happy for the success of friends without being judgmental. It may take time for others to understand our decisions and understand us. In the meantime they may feel hostile and hurt 😔 but we may have to let them contend with their own egos. As we also have had to work on the death of our own egos through our spiritual training.

You cannot be both horse and rider at the same time.

Bowl of Saki, March 8, by Hazrat Inayat Khan

Commentary by Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan:

The ego has two sides: the first one is the one we know, and the next one we must discover. The side we know is the false ego which makes us say, 'I'. What is it in us that we call 'I'? We say, 'This is my body, my mind, these are my thoughts, my feelings, my impressions, this is my position in life.' We identify our self with all that concerns us and the sum total of all these we call 'I'. In the light of truth this conception is false, it is a false identity.

   from  https://wahiduddin.net/mv2/VIII/VIII_1_20.htm

By reasoning with oneself and by trying to study oneself analytically it is possible to get nearer to the true knowledge of one's being. If we consider that every part that constitutes our being has its own name -- the hand, the foot, every part of our being has a different name, quality and purpose, and even a separate form -- what is it then in man which says 'I' and identifies itself with what it sees? It is not our head, hand or foot which says 'I' nor is it the brain. It is something that we cannot point out which identifies itself with all these different parts and says 'I' and mine and knows itself to be the person who sees. This in itself is ignorance, and it is this which the Hindus have called avidya.

How can you be that which you possess? You cannot be the horse and rider at the same time, nor can you be carpenter and tool at the same time. Herein lies the secret of mortality and immortality.

   from  https://wahiduddin.net/mv2/VIII/VIII_2_7.htm

What has taken possession of this accommodation? A deluded ego that says, 'I.' It is deluded by this body and mind and it has called itself an individual. When a man has a ragged coat he says, 'I am poor'. In reality his coat is poor, not he. What this capacity or accommodation contains is that which becomes his knowledge, his realization, and it is that which limits him. It forms that limitation which is the tragedy of every soul.

Now, this capacity may be filled with self, or it may be filled with God. There is only room for one. Either we live with our limitation, or we let God reign there in His unlimited Being.

   from  https://wahiduddin.net/mv2/X/X_3_4.htm
