i just read Lesson 96. i think the point that was most important to me was the Masters' quote: "We are absolutely dependent for life itself upon God's laws and he will show us the way out of all our difficulties... No matter what our difficulties may be, if we do not give up we are struggling against the stream, and to struggle is to win the favor of God."

lesson 96 ?  Shocked I won't get there til 2011 !!

Thanks for the sneak preview, I like that idea "He will show us the way out of all our difficulties ". Let us keep this in mind, when life is testing us.

Sometimes i am very grateful to pick up lesson 100 again because it has three exercises in guided meditation. i have been trying to memorize the one on practicing our infiniteness. i feel like Jonathan Livingston Seagull. i do not know if you saw the movie or read the book, or even heard the beautiful music created by Neil Diamond. But in the movie Jonathan had to practice his infiniteness to overcome his bondage to the herd and to his body. He became the vastness of space. 'Feel only one goal of perception---the vastness you wish to perceive within yourself' Repeat to yourself: "I am infinite" Go on mentally affirming this until you feel you are everything and beyond everything. Say: "I am timeless, I am spaceless, I am beyond the body, thought and speech; beyond matter and mind. I am spaceless, I am infinite Blessedness." Meditate on that. PY

Getting back to this practice with a friend today. There are two more guided meditations included with this lesson. Wow the SRF lessons sure have a lot to offer!

Meditation exercise #3 is especially interesting to me in lesson 100 because it includes an exercise for those who mostly perceive darkness in meditation.

Great quote, it carries a double connotation:

1) knowledge of God's laws and importance of receptivity to his intuitional guidance. Knowledge is power but to know those subtle laws we must be receptive and put aside the ego's hubris
2) warrior-like attitude in struggling against daily life difficulties and ubiquitous moods stemming from them

Just read this again. Thanks mccoy. I'm hoping you and I can share notes on what we have learned from the srf lessons. I serve during the week but have week ends off and this is a time I can read srf material. I also have the Bhagavad - Gita with Paramahansa Yogananda' s interpretation here at the house. It has many benefits living in a country like the United States but there also many drawbacks. One major one is being one dimensional about the Bible. i have always wanted to know the spiritual traditions of other cultures. Yet most people you talk to in the States only look at the Bible as spiritual authority. This is very sad and among other things has contributed to a lack of understanding about meditation and for instance Master's and Guru's. Sad  If you start quoting from other sources they often cannot even relate to those cultural influences. This has made our culture intolerant and quite ignorant in some ways.

Steve, what you say is in one way surprising. America tends to be far less bound to tradition than the old Europe, but in this aspect maybe it is doing worse.

I've Always imagined America like the place where innovation and new ideas in all fields are accepted and welcome, so maybe I was thinking about California in particular. It is sad to hear that across the board in matters of religion it's the other way around.

Here in Italy the Catholic culture is of course very strong and the bible is also king, or queen in this case. But I do not pay attention to it. Some people are skeptics or atheists, some others are Catholic but do not practice. I was one of the rare exceptions who welcomed eccentric and out of the ordinary ideas. A misfit according to some, a wise one according to an objective view. Well, I know the latter may sound a self praise but it is not, I'm simply realizing that religion-wise I had the gift of a developed discrimination. In other things I didn't but in this fortunately I've been lucky.

In lesson  99 Paramahansa Yogananda says: Thought is infinite. Every word represents an ideal conception of the Infinite, because behind every word and thought there is a manifestation of the Infinite. Many waves of thought are dancing in the waves of consciousness, but behind that there is a great unceasing ocean of truth. Our expressions are waves of the ocean of understanding.

That statement makes one much more receptive to listening to the views of others!

I find I'm pretty willing to listen to the views of the Others but sometimes I find some views are so much anti-logical and biased that I loose my willingness. Also, I find that some people do not accept logical retorts, getting back to their opinions without revising them after for example an informed opinion has been given. Seems like minds generally like to flow in the same riverbed, hating to deviate in other beds regardless.

Yes I would say so; to go against the grain and find your own way. I read this about lesson 98 and it seems to apply to you since you have found your own environment here at this forum as an example.

Lesson 98

First, the evil thought in a individual leads him to an evil environment to express himself in like manner. Then again, another free act of will, he can change his mind and consequently change his environment. But when one constantly remains mentally in an evil environment , that environment b begins to strongly affect him and to exert an almost unconscious upon him, and in time he almost entirely loses his freedom to choose a different environment or the power to become free from the resented, undesirable influence over the specific evil environment.

Mccoy

You have quite a chance to expose yourself to a different environment when Amma comes to Italy  in Nov 2016. 😇 Hope you take advantage of it! I can't begin to tell you how such change of environments has changed my life! If u should ever decide to come to the states again let me know. It would nice to spend time with you as we do here!

..."we reason according to our own mentality. We ourselves are results of causation ; therefore we think all l things are from a cause. But that isn't so. God is causeless. In him there is no cause and effect." P.Y.

So the the question of who made God does not apply. I have found that many people in my life have also reasoned thru the filter of their own minds and thus misunderstood me completely and no doubt I have been guilty of the same thing. We really need to leave ourselves open to the fact that we may have come to some false conclusions thru our limited human reasoning
capacity and have completely misunderstood what we thought to be true. The human mind is very limited in its ability to really understand since it is so influenced by the spin doctor of our ego and trying to put together a story in our own heads of what other people are about and what this world is about.

Even though you believe yourself to be strong, evil environment has a subtle influence that gradually undermines your fortifications, and so every effort must be made to attain good environment. Seek soul joy instead of mere sense pleasure. To exterminate a bad habit, negativity avoid everything that occasions it for stimulates it. Then positively plant a good habit and cultivate it with great intensity until it becomes a part of yourself. P.Y.
