I think that restlessness is one of the greatest enemies of a good meditation practice. i have observed this for many years and have some ways that i have started to overcome it. i wonder if others would like to comment on this subject?

I agree on the idea that restlessness is "one of the greatest enemies of a good meditation practise". I have resolved already to make 2010 my year for establishing a good meditation practise, so that I can deepen in the following years. So, if you have any strategies for overcoming restlessness, I would be very pleased to hear them, Jitendraji.

Thanks for the interest Prabhat and Live to Learn. It seems that restless  feeling is often gives us the idea to get up and end our meditations. However it can manisfest at any time. i was at the grocery store and noticed myself getting restless waitng in line. i think that this search for God requires a lot of patience. Patience with ourselves, patience with others and patience with our search for God. We can always find ways to occupy our minds when we get restless. If we are too restless to wait in a line or meditate we can use that time praying and giving an extra effort to practicing the presence.

i also have found that being around people who are restless and worldly is a strong detriment to spiritual practice. We/i tend to not practice the presence as much and we become the vibes and aura of those we surround ourselves with. Well that's a start maybe some of you can contribute. This subject is vast in its scope. The answers and solutions might seem simple but putting it in practice is not always so simple. If we were not so restless our spiritual stature would be much more noticeable. So i have to remind myself of these things when the events and circumstances bring them out in me.

I have experienced this restless feeling during meditation, this get up and end the meditation feeling. It is very difficult to conquer this feeling and return to the meditation, once it has started. I am wondering if there is possibly a message in this restlessness ? Seems to be, most everything else has a message or a lesson connected to it.

I noticed a restless feeling last night, there were a few stressful events, so I decided to just not deal with anything and go to sleep. Of course, sleep wasn't co- operating, and I thought ok, just relax and meditate a bit. That wasn't working either. Thoughts kept drifing in and out, no particular thoughts, just random ones... eventually I fell asleep.

So, just wondering about the possibility of " restlessness " being some kind of message. I am not thinking it means to focus or have patience, those messages are overused, lol ! So any other ideas ?

i actually wanted to put this with Lesson 15 about 'Good and Bad Habits' But it seemed to glare at me while reading this lesson.

'Those who meditate little, and vaguely feel they may some day contact God, find that their desire to do so vanishes when they are invaded by the pwerful habit of restlessness.'

'A man who is always restless, and never meditative, thinks that he is all right because he has become accustomed to being a slave of restlessness. However, as soon as he tries to meditate and be calm, he finds resistance from the bad habit of mental fickleness. But after he has formed the habit of meditation, he learns that when the habit  of restlessness tries to usurp the throne of his consciousness, it finds new meditation-guard and the awakened occult soldiers of past lives offering resistance.

Sometimes it helps to know what we are experiencing and why. This lesson was meant for many of us. Paramahansa Yogananda has many good recomendations for restlessness including right company, the food we eat, the places we inhabit and our attitudes.

Thank you Steve. Once again, it seems that meditation is the key. I will re- read lesson 15, and the meditation lesson. Somehow I had a feeling that regular meditation practices would enter into the conversation.

Interesting to note, how past life whatevers continually make an appearance in this current life, in this case, " awakened occult soldiers of past lives offering resistance" .

Yes, I can relate to Yogananda's good recommendations, I have recently come to notice this more and more. People, places and things that once held an interest, seem to be fading away, slow by slow.

Wink 'The beginner on the spiritual path may take courage from this thought: No matter how many times a man suffers from powerful attacts of sense-attractions and restlessness-producing material desires, he finds the meditation-born, occult soldiers of ths life, and past lives, coming to his aid." ~Yogananda

restless mind....

i try to reach God....sometimes it is hard to hear Him/Her through the dins of life.

what i do in this case....silent chant.....or silent conversations...or use imagination as fuel, hold my arms out for Hug from God.

an example(s) of what i might say to our All Loving Parent....a simple "i love you",,,over and over.  or " i want to see what you do, i want to hear what you do, i want to think as you think...i want to be just like you ".   this...creates love in the heart....

what parent...can resist their child coming to them with arms held out wanting love from parent ??

...and you will feel the physical embrace of God if/when you see Amma in her planned visit to Detroit next summer.
