Restlessness in meditation is a serious obstacle which should be dealt with and adequate strategy. A strategy of war. Unfortunately, a busy life favours restlessness. Being retired would be a definite advantage. But Satan is working to avoid that. In my country retirement age is swifting upward evermore.

Your use of the word Satan interests me. i usually use the word maya to describe a similar energy. But the use of 'Satan' seems to really personalize this evil that often controls people or tempts us to do things we would not normaly do if it wasnt for the enticing nature that allures us.

Yes, of course the term is not specific to everyone's case, since it is not that Satan is interested in my personal case, rather he commands his legions of evil powers which are doing there best to keep humankind in a state of delusion.

Overpopulation, greed, wars, you name it. It's all the fruit of negative or evil ideas seeded by Satan's troops

It sounds like you really do believe that there are a group of entities that really just want to make life miserable for other people.
I'm not doubting you.... just questions come up in my mind. What kind of satisfaction can this give them?

Steve, they are deranged spirits. what satisfaction has a sadistic person seeing others suffering? He enjoys that simply because it's part of his derangement. Those entities enjoy chaos and doom, they like it even as we like to breath pure mountain air.

hmmm.  The part that does not make sense is that what we do to others we also do to ourselves. So being cruel to others will cause cruelty to ourselves. i suppose these entities do not believe this which means they are under the sway of avidya and maya.

There have been livign examples of such demonic creatures. One of them is Stalin., Even more than Hitler.

He was cruel to millions of people, his own people. He cultivated Revenge. He was a master of deception. He never had any thoughts about cruelties to himself. Nobody or nothing could be cruel to him because he was totally heartless.
Hard to understand these creatures.

Monkeys love to imitate whatever they see and some persons are like that. Monkeys are very restless too, always moving and frisking about. Their are people also who cannot rest even for a few minutes. They have to keep going all the time. Monkey like personalities imitate others' customs, fashions, idiosyncrasies, good or bad habits and ideals without discrimination. Imitation without reason is productive of little good. ( However even blind imitation of good principles is good, and imitation of evil habits is of course harmful. )

"So I say to you, seek God, and discover Him and make Him a power in your life.
Without Him all of our efforts turn to ashes and our sunrises into darkest nights.
Without Him, life is a meaningless drama with the decisive scenes missing.
But with him we are able to rise from the fatigue of despair to the buoyancy of hope.
With Him we are able to rise from the midnight of desperation to the daybreak of Joy.
St. Augustine was right: 'we were made for God and we will be restless until we find rest in Him.'

Love yourself, if that means rational, healthy, and moral self-interest. You are commanded to do that. That is the length of life. Love your neighbor as you love yourself. You are commanded to do that. That is the length of breadth of life.
But never forget that there is a first and even greater commandment, “Love the Lord your God with all thy heart and all thy soul and all thy mind.” This is the height of life. And when you do this you live the complete life.”

~Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I have found that it is often easier to meditate when you wake up in the middle of the nite. Because it is really quiet
and there is less restless activity both internally and externally. One challenging factor though can be the temptation to go rite back asleep.

...Or falling asleep anyway while meditating cross-legged. Happened often to me. The body remains in the posture, the mind starts dreaming. Or hallucinating.

Often we are able to witness restlessness in ourselves and those around us. As someone becomes more and more restless they are more and more irritable, less patient and more easily angered. If we allow ourselves little or no time for meditation we will soon be overwhelmed by such conditions and usually people who are.... blame their condition on others.

I think so too, however, most all day long I am surrounded by restless people, maybe except for the CEO. Easy to blame them though when you're the only one around that is trying to NOT be restless.

Recently it has become clear to me how impossible it is to cover every path and form of meditation. I've found this is an impossible task and unnecessary. There is not life or time enough to justify trying it. It is a person seeking something that satisfies them, but once you have found a teaching that grabs you, I feel it's better to give that the attention it deserves rather than endlessly surveying all the countless paths out there(as many as their are people).

Peace, love, I'll shutup now.

 Grin

Yes i would agree but this forum is not just about my path. On the flip side though sometimes we are justifying restless activity. Restlessness has many faces.

i checked thru these pages and one thing that i see missing is meditation techniques. i have found that having many different approaches to meditation make the practice exciting, less routine and sometimes stale. When i feel restlessness come upon me and find it hard to settle down i often change my routine and try some practices that occupy the mind or the body until i have calmed down. This is the advantage of having lessons on meditation...having Spiritual Guides and Gurus. They know how difficult it can be to settle the mind and have created many techniques to do so. There are a tremendous amount of techniques to practice with the breath alone and we can always get up energize, practice hatha yoga, jog or swim to equalize and release tensions that cause restlessness. i often do the 10-10-10 breathing exercises. Tense and relax body parts and remain mindful of any residual tension in the body that contributes to restlessness. i also like doing the 15-25-40 breath holds that Paramahansa Yogananda mentions in his Lessons. At times i practice affirmations and visualization exercises as well to calm a restless mind.

One further important observation. Everybody has things they want to accomplish and manifest in their lives: A home. Pay the bills. Get a car. Find a boyfriend or girlfriend. Experience an emotional high. Sexual satisfaction. The right political system that fits our ideas. Have friends. And the list goes on. But what we do not realize is that all these desires, though may not in themselves be bad, contribute to a restless mind. Very few people are happy with what is, what they have and more importantly what they are.
