 "Know your mind as the sky;
Allow everything to pass on through,
The clouds, the lightning, the winds,
All of it, even the blue itself.
Don't even get caught on the blue.
See and hear whatever arises,
But don't grasp at anything.
Don't even get caught on the sky. "

I agree on the idea that restlessness is "one of the greatest enemies of a good meditation practise". I have resolved already to make 2010 my year for establishing a good meditation practise, so that I can deepen in the following years. So, if you have any strategies for overcoming restlessness, I would be very pleased to hear them, Jitendraji.

Pranams to Live to Learn Miss your presence here.

Mindfulness is a good way to observe restlessness. What is restlessness? i was witnessing restlessness for quite of period of time yesterday while 'sitting'. Isn't restlessness anticipating the future? Isn't restlessness a lack of faith in what will come? Isn't restlessness desire that things will turn out a certain way? Watching restless behavior. It is never being satisfied with what is. Watching the restless thoughts continue to b anywhere but in the present. The present: where all answers will manifest if we clear r mind and then pray for solutions.

one of my  relative was with me recently. he met a sanyasi in the train who read  the original manuscript of Nesfield(writer of  grammer  book). There Nesfield mentioned Past tense, present and future  tense and said tense means tension. past and  future gives tension.
The present was written without the word tense.I don't know whether the story is correct. But present is the god's present and
other two are  tense(tension).

Sometimes when we empty ourselves of the past and the future we feel the emptiness of the present. In that emptiness can b deposited helpful console on present affairs that we often gather after r meditation session.

One of the best deterents to restlessness is to seek out like minded people and group meditation practice. The occult soldiers from past spiritual efforts will come forth.  It is also helpful to pray to God saying: God I cannot sit still without your help. Please help me. Every parent will help their children if they need help. Like wise our cosmic parent will help us.

Jitendra

I have experienced this restless feeling during meditation, this get up and end the meditation feeling. It is very difficult to conquer this feeling and return to the meditation, once it has started. I am wondering if there is possibly a message in this restlessness ? Seems to be, most everything else has a message or a lesson connected to it.

I noticed a restless feeling last night, there were a few stressful events, so I decided to just not deal with anything and go to sleep. Of course, sleep wasn't co- operating, and I thought ok, just relax and meditate a bit. That wasn't working either. Thoughts kept drifing in and out, no particular thoughts, just random ones... eventually I fell asleep.

So, just wondering about the possibility of " restlessness " being some kind of message. I am not thinking it means to focus or have patience, those messages are overused, lol ! So any other ideas ?

“You live like this, sheltered, in a delicate world, and you believe you are living. Then you read a book(Lady Chatterley, for instance), or you take a trip, or you talk with friends, and you discover that you are not living, that you are hibernating. The symptoms of hibernating are easily detectable: first, restlessness. The second symptom(when hibernating becomes dangerous and might degenerate into death): absence of pleasure. That is all. It appears like an innocuous illness. Monotony, boredom, death. Millions live like this(or die like this) without knowing it. They work in offices. They drive a car. They picnic with their families. They raise children. And then some shock treatment takes place, a person, a book, a song, and it awakens them and saves them from death."

first part of the quote i agree with but i do not agree with....."show me a thoroughly satisfied man and i will show you a failure"....

i am just guessing here....christ was a thoroughly satisfied man.....he was not a failure.

i am guessing...that many gurus of god are thoroughly satisfied...they are /were not failures.

mother theresa.....saint francis....etc

i am guessing that mr.edison was speaking of 'main stream society'.....but still, it is not a true statement.

of course, unless....you find that christ and the others i mention above, you consider failures.....

i would like to clarify something....

Passion is a term applied to a very strong feeling about a person or thing. Passion is an intense emotion compelling feeling, enthusiasm, or desire for something.

so....we can have passion for or towards god.

One who is accustomed to meditating and contacting God will like to meditate more and more in order to commune with God more frequently. Those who meditate little and only vaguely feel his presence find that their desire to meditate and contact God vanishes when the mind is invaded by the powerful habit of restlessness. Likewise those who are accustomed to being calm attract calmness and serenity, while those who are a little calm find their calmness easily disturbed when restlessness invades.  Strong unspiritual habits entirely destroy the power of weak spiritual habits.~Paramahansa Yogananada
