8. Samadhi

Patanjali describes this eighth and final stage of ashtanga, samadhi, as a state of ecstasy. At this stage, the meditator merges with his or her point of focus and transcends the Self altogether. The meditator comes to realize a profound connection to the Divine, an interconnectedness with all living things. With this realization comes the "peace that passeth all understanding"; the experience of bliss and being at one with the Universe. On the surface, this may seem to be a rather lofty, "holier than thou" kind of goal. However, if we pause to examine what we really want to get out of life, would not joy, fulfillment, and freedom somehow find their way onto our list of hopes, wishes, and desires? What Patanjali has described as the completion of the yogic path is what, deep down, all human beings aspire to: peace. We also might give some thought to the fact that this ultimate stage of yoga—enlightenment—can neither be bought nor possessed. It can only be experienced, the price of which is the continual devotion of the aspirant.

I think you have experienced this at some point Steve...  Perhaps, while in the presence of Amma... or while practicing mantra...

Art thanks for taking an interest in this subject. To think and desire it’s experience and various states of higher consciousness is to strengthen its potential of manifestation in our present life. This is our potential at different times and places and we should keep it in our awareness as the constant goal of life. Whatever I may have experienced....it is good to keep in mind that God inspires us thru our friends and their higher experiences as well.

People have momentary experiences such as this .... but it is a matter of a true guru to be in a state of nirvikalpa samadhi which is to be in that state of samadhi continuously in contradistinction to savikalpa samadhi which is temporary and intermittent.

At various times in our life we practice and experience various states of consciousness that we can identify in Pantanjali’s 8 fold path. It is not just a one way journey to the top but we can also go back and address issues from other steps we may have overlooked or have not totally completed in our spiritual journey.

Art, I believe recently you have had experiences associated with;

5. Pratyahara

Pratyahara, the fifth limb, means withdrawal or sensory transcendence. It is during this stage that we make the conscious effort to draw our awareness away from the external world and outside stimuli. Keenly aware of, yet cultivating a detachment from, our senses, we direct our attention internally. The practice of pratyahara provides us with an opportunity to step back and take a look at ourselves. This withdrawal allows us to objectively observe our cravings: habits that are perhaps detrimental to our health and which likely interfere with our inner growth.

Dear Art and anyone else interested....

According to Ramana, Sirvakalpa is temporary Samadhi with focused attention (perhaps on a mantra or the breath).  Nirvakalpa is temporary Samadhi with no awareness of the body.  Sahaja Nirvakalpa is the Natural State of permanent abiding in Self.

I believe I may have experienced Nirvakalpa a year ago, for about 3-5 hours.  I have a post on here describing it in detail (of course I can only describe what led up to it and coming out of it, as Samadhi is indescribable).

I’m trying to not make it into a “carrot on a stick”.  All of Life is Samadhi, and those Awakened Ones See It.

Lately, I’m just trying to forget all of it, and just let this body-mind Be What Is.

The words of the Guru are the Water to Purify...

Nisargadatta says “You are not the body.  You are Pure Consciousness”

It is interesting Art... I have found that even Masters or those who transcribe their writings do not always have the same definition or outlook on everything. I have never heard of Sahaja Nirvakalpa in all the years I have studied yoga.

A definition of the term I read was this;

Sahaja (Sanskrit: सहज sahaja) means spontaneous enlightenment in Indian and Tibetan Buddhist spirituality. Sahaja practices first arose in Bengal during the 8th century among Buddhist yogis called Sahajiya siddhas.

Nirvikalpa  is a Sanskrit adjective with the general sense of "not wavering," "admitting no doubt," "free from change or differences." In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali it refers to meditation without an object. Wikipedia

It is not for me to surmise what you have experienced brother... I just want to write here again what i originally described as the eighth step...

However this was taken from the yoga journal

https://www.yogajournal.com/practice/the-eight-limbs

In lesson 114 of the Self -Realization Fellowship lessons Paramahansa Yogananda describes nirbikalpa samadhi this way:

The final state of unbroken oneness with God consciousness everywhere - - nirbikalpa samadhi

Thanks for sharing your experiences Art... I believe it is inspirational to share the various experiences we have and share with others thru the years. It gives inspiration and recognition of our own experiences as well. Many times we may have had spiritual and psychic experiences and had others or ourselves poohoo them. It is important to recognize that even seemingly little blessings should be looked on as blessings. Life is often filled with blessings that many people do not even recognize happening in their lives daily and often by the moment. I was just thinking to myself; that after all these years my heart is still beating and functioning properly ... 😳 wow!

Nirbija Samadhi or nirvikalpa samadhi

There are no results for nirbija-samadhi, and Nirvikalpa samadhi is the second stage of samadhi, a meditative state of total absorption and bliss. ... The state of nirvikalpa samadhi can only be attained by advanced practitioners, who have progressed through previous stages such as dharana (concentration) and dhyana (meditation).Oct 2, 2020 https://www.yogapedia.com › nirvik...

Definition - What does Nirbija Samadhi mean?

Nirbija samadhi is the highest state of samadhi, or spiritual bliss and Self-realization, in yoga and Buddhism. It is referred to in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras as the ultimate goal of Raja yoga.

Nirbija is a Sanskrit term that literally means “without seed.” Thus, nirbija samadhi is sometimes translated as “samadhi without seed.” This indicates a state of enlightenment, or spiritual bliss, that is arrived at spontaneously. To be in nirbija samadhi is to experience absolute liberation from the attachments and thoughts of the mind.

In contemporary yoga, nirbija samadhi is sometimes considered to be synonymous with the activation of kundalini.

Yogapedia explains Nirbija Samadhi

Some describe nirbija samadhi in terms of dualism, as a non-dual state of consciousness. When a yogi enters this state, he/she has transcended all illusions of duality and has seen through all projections of separation.

The experience of nirbija samadhi is, therefore, said to be one where the mind becomes radiant and formless, entirely free from conditioning, projection and attachment. It is a state of spiritual oneness, where the mind entirely dissolves. There is no longer any distinguishing between the known and the knower, subject and object, or the seer and the seen.

Nirbija samadhi can also be described as the highest state of yoga and the embodiment, or end product, of all meditation.
