machiavellian opportunism works against democracy principles~Jitendra

Trump says he might veto Hong Kong human rights bill because of China trade talks
President Trump suggested Friday that he might veto legislation designed to support pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong — despite its near-unanimous support in the House and Senate — to pave the way for a trade deal with China.
Speaking on the “Fox & Friends” morning program, the president said that he was balancing competing priorities in the U.S.-China relationship.
“We have to stand with Hong Kong, but I’m also standing with President Xi [Jinping], he’s a friend of mine. He’s an incredible guy, but we have to stand … I’d like to see them work it out, okay?” the president said. “I stand with freedom, I stand with all of the things that I want to do, but we are also in the process of making one of the largest trade deals in history. And if we could do that, it would be great.”

The president has faced calls from lawmakers in both parties to speak out about what’s at stake in Hong Kong’s escalating demonstrations. “The world should hear from him directly that the United States stands with these brave men and women," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said this week.

In the interest of freedom and democracy will we now turn our backs on the people of Hong Kong as we did supporting the monarchy of Saudi Arabia instead of the freedom of speech of a journalist who in both cases the Americans have lost their moral compass and chosen to help the powers of enslavement and autocracy instead of freedom and liberty. America has lost its best when we have a president who has no values to offer the world but those of selfishness and self interest at the cost and loss of those around the world who world who had looked to this country as a beacon of light to illuminate the free world... but now see us as an example of darkness and spiritual depravity.

Quote
First, it must be understood that Hong Kong developed into a commercial powerhouse as a British colony, and its residents enjoyed some aspects of democratic freedom not available on mainland China. British rule of Hong Kong ended when it was returned to China in July of 1997 under the framework of “one country, two systems.” The “Basic Law” constitution guaranteed to protect, for the next 50 years, the democratic institutions that make Hong Kong distinct from Communist-ruled mainland China.

The struggle for an expansion of democratic freedoms on the island have been ongoing in some form or another ever since, with some initiatives specifically supported by the “Basic Law.” Meanwhile, the national Chinese government has attempted to resist such reforms, and has been working to augment its own power and influence over Hong Kong
