So, I didn't realize this, but the movie is actually based off of a novel based on John Lilly's experiments in the isolation tank. It turns out that the author of the book, Paddy Chayefsky - also the scriptwriter - disowned the film and had his name taken off of it due to the general tone. He and the director fought all throughout the making of the film. I learned this because when you rent a movie from Amazon, they offer bits of trivia about it.
