Nomaste reminded me of the time he and i saw Amma in Los Angeles. It is traditional though not necessary..to give something small to an avatar when receiving there blessings. At the time i honestly felt that to be truthful i really did not have anything to give her but a lot of rotten karma. So i gave Amma a lemon. She took the lemon and put it in her mouth and bit into it. i am so happy u reminded me Scott. It was quite an experience seeing that lemon in her mouth and she did not seem to mind it at all.

Maybe she took some of sourness besides. It i said that a master is impartial to the negativity or 'positive' offerings we give them. The importance is that we give.

Nice story about Amma. Also, biting a lemon is not so granted as biting an apple.

if u mean that biting into a lemon is not quite the same and preferred as an apple. i would concur. i think the point here is that a Master is beyond conventional likes and dislikes of unenlightened beings. She seemed to be O.K. with taking my bitterness if that is what i offered her as my 'love offering'. At times in our lives we become aware of how much negativity and difficult karma we have to offer at the feet of the divine.... and it may surprise us to see some of it taken by a Master on our behalf.

Mccoy it my interest u that most of the offerings r fruit. Usually Amma takes them and gives them to the staff behind or beside her. Rarely does she eat or bite into them.

When darshan is over u always receive a 'gift' handed to u by Amma. It could be rose petals and chocolate or may b a fruit. U may b asked if u want to sit with Amma on stage for quite a while. This too is one more blessing.

That's what I meant, it is so unusual to bite such a bitter and pungent fruit, so unlike biting a sweet and agreeable apple or similar fruits.

The whole point of this still amazes me and I think back on this experience now when I’m dealt some sour fruit in life. It is best to give it to the Master. Only she knows how to digest it for us. Giving all fruits of action to the Master is the recipe for success and understanding. Now I recognize why this incident occurred. Amma knows how to absorb our bitter experiences in life. A Master can absorb our sours when we do not know how to. We just need faith that this to will pass and the blessings of continued practice of our sadhana is always there. We just need the receptivity to recognize it.

I told a friend, that often went to see Amma with me, and she responded well wouldn’t you be hungry setting there as long as she does? I responded; ‘“But her face didn’t even pucker up at the bitterness.”My friend responded; ‘Well what did you expect from a Saint?’ I reflected on that statement and recognized that was an added example and lesson from the experience. Be patient and endure the bitter experiences of life while continuing to live in your own truth and happiness.

Bite the lemon!

Perhaps it is a similar concept of embrace the suck!.

This latter military expression means that, when facing a bad experience, you must embrace it to overcome it.

Not biting the lemon, not embracing the suck, or escaping from a difficult situation karma imposed upon us will surely bring us back to the problem, amplified many times over.

Or maybe it's just a suggestion to overcome the senses or a way to express love to whatever offer is given by devotees, or maybe a way to share your feelings (being a lemon), or perhaps a way to say how you have to eat out your negative feeling.

It's interesting that there are so many interpretations of that simple gesture.

Thanks for all your insights which I did not think of at all! Yes often Amma’s guidance and lessons had different significance to me. As an example when I went to her ashram in Northern California (San Ramon) to see her when she was visiting and her attendants at the huge parking area would not let me in with my van.  I asked why and they looked at it and implied it used too much gas for having only one passenger. Getting the lesson quickly (this time) … I became a taxi for people at the hotel miles away who were seeking rides to the event. I slept and lived in my van on and off while living in California.

I had some dreams after falling back asleep but can't remember too well... I did not practice recalling. I would also add the concern from Amma felt like she cared about me. If it wasn't for Steve I never would have sent my self to Dallas to visit her. These saints seem to bring out dreams or unique experiences the night before and during. I've dreamt of Anandamayi Ma, Two different Amma's and Gurunath. All saints I have met in person. I am fortunate for their care and guidance, even if I'm just passing by.

And to add the sensation of playing guitar in my dreams is so familiar. It's not the first time either. Strumming the strings and then playing individual strings- it was very therapeutic and rewarding.

I’ve just noticed that some people are like a cool breeze on a very hot day. They come to refresh us and comfort us. Sometimes you tune into their joy and you realize that there is something extraordinarily wonderful about life that they have tuned into and have the capacity to transfer that joy to anyone that attempts to tune in. When you recognize that you yourself being full of darkness and you are bringing your troubles to them and they say ‘if you have nothing more to give but your trouble do so I will easily take them on to myself, as though they are a gift and the only gift you have to give for now.’ I did this in a literal sense. I gave Amma a lemon 🍋 and she took it in her hand put it up to her mouth and took a big bite. I recognized she loved taking my sorrows. Bring all your joys and sorrows to such a being and they will  transform them into love. All it takes is a willingness to believe that love is always there to awaken and comfort your life.

It becomes quite evident that no ordinary type of consciousness could willingly bite into and through the tough and bitter skin of a lemon and take a bite of it willingly while giving you a darshan hug.

Steve, thanks for responding to my dream. It's fascinating the depth you were able to articulate after having the experience with the lemon. What do you think of such people existing in times that defy the state of mind describing lower Yugas?

They have certain ‘missions’ to help out social conditions or others they are tied to karmically speaking.
