After I left the dentist office, loaded on nitrous oxide, I felt that this is the buddha-like state that people are more or less trying to work up to. And it was achieved in five minutes and the feeling of peace lasted the whole day. It was as good as any meditation I have ever done.

It is obvious that u have not meditated very deep nor have u been practicing meditation long enough or perhaps r not using techniques that would help u develop something deeper. While certain chemicals, drugs and outside sources can alter states of consciousness.... They r no equal to certain blessings from the darshan of a saint or deep meditation practice. Your honesty on the matter is good. Now what r u going to do about it? U r still young b and there is yet much for u to experience in this life. Experiences during meditation will never equal changes we make in ourselves that r a result of meditation and spiritual practice. i have already seen some of these take place in u.

Nitrous. I remember those days. I only had that when I was under 12 years old. He called it the "space ride". The amazing thing is it wears off in no time. At least that stuff did, don't know what it is now. Back then the cavity filling method was crude, over-drilling out good teeth to make a fill.

I would say that particular feeling from nitrous, to me, if I remember correctly, is kind of a similar energy feeling, but more external, outside. Been a long time.

Yes i had an experience with peyote once. It was very productive for me but nothing like the internal peace, bliss and love i felt in meditation. It's a different kind of 'high'. u can say that of intimacy and sexuality as well. There is often an aftermath associated with pleasure of all kinds if they r done indiscriminately and continuously whereas meditation does not have the same 'side-effects'. i am not denigrating other experiments and experiences just putting things in perspective. If someone does not or has not had these experiences in meditation and seen  their lives transformed they need to look at their own efforts and techniques of practice. To make comparisons with physical phenomena is missing the spiritual significance that can only come with a corresponding change in attitude regarding the importance of physical reality. Someone trapped in the senses will always loose hope in the importance of spirituality if they give up. The senses will always wage a war against the spirit, this is maya which keeps us tied to the world and the delusive belief that all physical phenomena is more important then spiritual realization and understanding.

U never forget something u found on your own thru spiritual practice. It arises within u and is not imposed from the outside. It brings permanent changes to yourself. Without it your spiritual connection is still tenuous at best and could b severed at any time because there is still that functioning from a totally ego perspective and not from soul. 'And that's the truth (Tooth)'. Like your sense of shroomer.

Another important aspect: intoxicant compounds almost invariably have a negative effect on health. Sometimes they are downright desruptive to physical and mental health. The high derived from meditation is never damaging .
