I remember early in my sadhana having this idea that everything around us and that we attract to us is part of our consciousness. I am not sure where the idea originated or where I got it. I do remember my aunt always saying to take a good look at the things you do not like in others because it is in yourself otherwise it would not affect you.

Recently i read SRF Lesson summary for lesson 117 and I found Paramahansa Yogananda   saying practically the same thing in different words. "Unless there is a relativity of vibrations there cannot be cognizance of any vibration in the universe. Do you realize how much that statement explains? Anything of which you are cognizant has a relative vibration within yourself. One who is quick to see and judge evil in another person has the seed  of that evil within himself. The God like person of high vibrational tone is always aware of the God-spark in all contacts, and his magnetic soul vibration draws to greater intensity that vibrational force in those who come within his vibrational range. Everything in creation have a different rate of vibration. The different rates of vibration balanced in the cosmic rhythm produce before us the majestic cosmos."

That's tough though, since we still need to understand and recognize evil or bad behaviours so that we know what to avoid (can't have good without bad)

But at the same time it cannot be judged, I guess, just accepted as fact, otherwise yes it might affect you.

It appears that this issue has 2 different aspects:

1- If we see evil in others, the seed of evil is in us. Yogananda's aunt slapped the young Yogananda walking blissfully and unawarely naked after a bath in the Gange. Yogananda retorted: 'You see evil because the evil is in you'. In India it is told that nakedness used to be a taboo. But actually, the aunt identified such harmless nudity with sexual sin, which was not at all the case.

2- We must apply God-given discrimination. So we must recognize evil and judge the others for the following puroposes:
a- avoid the company of the one behaving evilishly, or at least be careful of his/her negative vibrations
b- avoid to behave in the same evil or unappropriate way we observed in the others.

Recognizing a negative trait does not necessarily means we posses that negative trait. That comes from my own experience. I can recognize a junkie and judge him as a junkie, but I never took any drugs in my life and if I have such mental seeds they are so far back that I cannot think about them. My discrimination tells me the junkie will lie to get his dose, that the junkie is unreliable, that the junkie needs badly help but probably I won't be able to fix it and that money given to the junkie will be used for his next dose.

Same goes for many other traits

What i have noticed is that difficult people have a way of falling out of our lives because their frequency does not match ours... quite often, if not usually, we do not have to do much.

Most people are more good then bad. Recognizing their good or bad reinforces that attribute. Since we are not their guru sent to 'train them' it is more beneficial to acknowledge what good we see and not let ourselves b influenced by the challenging aspects.

I agree that that's would be the most sensible way to go
