The Tibetan word bardo means literally "intermediate state"—also translated as "transitional state" or "in-between state" or "liminal state". In Sanskrit the concept has the name antarabhāva. It is a concept which arose soon after the Buddha's passing, with a number of earlier Buddhist groups accepting the existence of such an intermediate state, while other schools rejected it.

Used loosely, the term "bardo" refers to the state of existence intermediate between two lives on earth. According to Tibetan tradition, after death and before one's next birth, when one's consciousness is not connected with a physical body, one experiences a variety of phenomena. These usually follow a particular sequence of degeneration from, just after death, the clearest experiences of reality of which one is spiritually capable, and then proceeding to terrifying hallucinations that arise from the impulses of one's previous unskillful actions. For the prepared and appropriately trained individuals the bardo offers a state of great opportunity for liberation, since transcendental insight may arise with the direct experience of reality, while for others it can become a place of danger as the karmically created hallucinations can impel one into a less than desirable rebirth.

The term bardo can also be used metaphorically to describe times when our usual way of life becomes suspended, as, for example, during a period of illness or during a meditation retreat. Such times can prove fruitful for spiritual progress because external constraints diminish. However, they can also present challenges because our less skillful impulses may come to the foreground, just as in the sidpa bardo.

It interests me how are desires and thoughts lead us to so many realities. Here we see it again in the bardo states.

The Second Bardo of the Afterlife

If the first bardo passes and attempts to access spiritual states were unsuccessful, the next bardo begins. The second bardo or the "bardo of becoming" is a stage in which the desires of the individual are said to carry the largely helpless soul through a great variety of intense emotional states. Good thoughts bring great bliss and pleasure, and hateful or negative thoughts bring great pain and desolation. The soul bounces from thought to thought as a torrent of thoughts and feelings come like a waterfall. Existing thought habits and desires are said to define the experience of the soul during the afterlife in this way.

Thanks for the link, I've not read yet, but let me share my view on bardos before I'm influenced by reading it...

BARDO = realm or dimension flows ( of consciousness and energy ) -- primarily used to explain the transitional experience states and karmic propensities after human form is departed, and before another incarnation.

At death, go into most expansive spiritual state,
then by law begin to pass thru pathways of one's akashic record / samskaras --
depending on how magnetizing or hypnotizing these elements act on the being,
they either continue to flow,
or potentially the magnetic or gravitational field is so strong that the being creates a whirlpool of energy out of that stuff, and is sucked into that seed symbol experience like unto a whirlpool...
this then is spun up into an experiential field for the being, that may form a realm, world in any variation of causal, astral, or physical planes...
but the key is that if we have not faced our samskaras, and cooled the oscillations while living -- as an advancing yogi does, etc.,
then we will not be sufficiently practiced at cooling the oscillations and remaining and dwelling in neutral / spiritualized heart / nucleus...

so instead of acting as a flow, we act as a unit -- and specifically as a unit identified with a specific experience (that which we bound upon / whirlpooled upon)...

so then we spin up or are set into motion more dream lifes / lifetimes on earth, etc. to fulfill working out / demagnetizing from that samskara...

********
The key to liberation in the bardo states is to work on the bardo experience now...

Again, I'll go read thru the bardo article, and post more in line with it's disciplined explanations,
but thought it may (or not) be useful to share more direct personal insight, before bias of reading arises...

smiles !

Thanks Scott; when I was a teen ager I used to read about the bardo states from the Tibet Book of the Dead. My understanding was quite limited but I sensed the magnitude of spiritual wisdom there and was determined to get back to it.

Recently you mentioned these states on the phone and it triggered an immediate interest again. At various times we have had mind melds that were synergetic in our spiritual journey. Like sympathetic vibrations on strings of an instrument one can be witness to what at times seems to have no apparent source of origin.

I have also encountered that feeling with several others here. It is exhilarating to see the divine plan express itself in various magnetizing events with divine friends that help us on this expansion into the light. We are fortunate to have these momentary remembrances with other kindred spirits. It awakens the magnetizing heart chakra as one is pulled back to the divine love that manifests between two souls regardless of sex, time and distance. Such is the familiarity of the timeless joy expressing from spirit!

I venture to say that Amma ' s physical nearness manifests thru similar encounters and blessings we have had with her and though we may not be visiting her this time... she nevertheless can visit and be with us! Divine Mother vibrates our heart strings.

I quoted this because again we can see that the absence or presence of thought is a strong determiner as to where we find ourselves after this life. That is why many of us here are working on our thoughts in our spiritual practice and during meditation; relinquishing thoughts in favor of witnessing them and ultimately witnessing consciousness.

' The spiritual traveler who has experienced the inner world during life can take the whirlwind nature of inner world following death with more calm and detachment.'

From....       http://www.spiritualtravel.org/OBE/afterdeath.html

The soul in the second bardo is many times caught in a dream state sometimes unaware that it has died, and incapable of taking action to raise its state of consciousness to a threshold level of awareness where it can direct its attention towards spiritual states.

This is one of the reasons it is important to do a regular spiritual practice during life. Doing meditation or prayer every day establishes a pattern of spiritual activity. It then becomes automatic and the habit of seeking after the divine reality continues during the after-death state where it can have powerful results. A daily spiritual practice differs from other more common spiritual practices such as going to church or temple because it is done more often than once or twice a week. Meditation therefore establishes a stronger habit pattern in the individual and is a valuable addition to group oriented spiritual activities such as attending church.

There are weapons that are simply thoughts. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy.

The book of the dead speaks of the importance of the Guru to help the soul traverse various experiences of light after departure from this physical realm. And, the importance of holding on to such experiences and welcoming them instead of fearing them. These various lights are also explained and illustrated in the SRF lessons and most likely in other spiritual traditions and texts. But if one has not acquainted oneself in life, through the practice of meditation, with these lights, they can produce fear in the various bardo states after death and send the soul into a whirlpool of fear and despair. Asking for the guidance of a true guru will be a spiritual journey most welcome at this moment of leaving this life and the body.

When there is not a lot of spiritual influence around us from other people I think it’s good to read about it, so a friend was talking about the bardo’s and I’ve had the book around for decades so I decided to read it. Even though it is a Buddhist text I find it quite like Vedic and Eastern narratives of death and the transition state. It seems like there are many more traps and gravitational pulls and thoughts that can easily side track us into rebirth and lower realms we may fall into if we are not careful.

The Autobiography paints a more happy ending for those having a guru and practicing such techniques as Kriya yoga. I am hoping that transition brings us to higher realms for a stay among spiritual influences where we are able to learn, keep meditating and serving the divine for a purposeful stay and unfoldment. I think that when certain wishes and exalted thoughts come to us we should pray for their manifestation, since all higher thoughts flow to us, and are broadcast from the higher causal realms.

States of transition.

1. From birth to death till start dying; the bardo of living.

2. Then the process of actual dying.

3. The bardo of clear light. Your consciousness dissolves into the most subdlest state of awareness.

4. Bardo between this life and the next.

Each bardo is an opportunity. Not static. We shouldn’t get frustrated but see each bardo - transition - is an opportunity.
