Title: Meditation
Post by: Jitendra Hy-do-u-no-us? on Sep 03, 2010 11:53 pm
Paramahansa Yogananda councils us in the SRF lessons that the greatest enemy of meditation is sensations or the memory of sensations.(Lesson 102) because they rouse thoughts. If no sensations entered the brain you could stop your thoughts. Sensations rouse thoughts. Thoughts constantly keep are minds active and make meditation impossible.

If we reflect on this it becomes apparent that we need to find a place where it is quite or their are soothing sounds that help us to not be disturbed by sensations and thoughts. The sensations that arouse thought must be cut off by constant vigilant and observation as well as techniques that can shut off the 5 sense telephones.

I believe there is a time and a place for both. Can we not appreciate the beauty of a rose garden, with the delicious fragrance and delicate beauty of the roses ? And the soft, velvet touch of the rose petals ? I do not think that Yogananda would like us to ignore such a delight, it enhances the senses, to appreciate the gifts that God has given us in this life. I think a meditation in a rose garden would be a delightful place to be as we raise our consciousness to God in appreciation for all the gifts He has given to us.

i would agree with you. i think it is important to choose the stimuli that is conducive to cooling the system and giving peace to the mind.

The point of higher meditation techniques is that in the dark ages we were unable to understand the concept of subtle energies. Today we have an understanding of electricity and magnetism. We magnetize the spiritual spine and draw the energy away from the senses when we meditate. This is not to say we can never enjoy the simple joys of the senses but rather to be able to detach ourselves from them when and if we need to so we are not affected by them or attached to them. In this way we can also become aware of the fact that our senses only offer us a very limited perception of what is within our consciousness. Furthermore when we magnetize the spine we start to be in tune with the more subtle vibrations  and higher levels of consciousness that we are not aware of while in the state of encounters with the outside world. It takes a much more higher state yet to enjoy this world of the senses and the inner worlds simultaneously. This is a state referred to as nirbikulpa samadhi by the yogis. In the meantime we are trying to reach the state of sirbikulpa samadhi which brings this awareness to us while we shut down the senses and retreat to an inner sanctum of bliss.

These higher forms of meditation are practices that are deeper than just the use of mantras. They are techniques for a higher age we are moving into. Mantras still are an important element of meditation and the spiritual life. But we must recognize that there are techniques that are much more powerful for our evolving consciousness. They are offered for those who are looking to burn karma off quickly and spiritually evolve in leaps and bounds. With the rise of inventions and energies that connect us faster through communication we also are able to understand that their are corresponding energies within ourselves that are possible to connect with and bring into focus. When these inner abilities become common we will be living in yet even a higher age called the Treta yoga. There are those of us who are already developing these inner potentialities in the Dwapara Yuga which is a period of rapid change and continuous new discoveries in the outside world. It is for us to forge ahead and pioneer the coming age.

Meditation begins the process of connecting us with who we are.
