But under the same hypnosis, a person can convince himself that the boiling water he's sitting in is actually cold water, and won't end up with a burn. As a Tibetan monk sitting in a boiling water tank explained to a passerby, "If you convince yourself the water you're in is boiling water, it will burn you, I convinced myself otherwise." From the point of view of science, it is impossible: it should have burned him a long time ago. After all, it is consciousness that controls the surrounding world and can change the physical properties of material objects.
