KYIV (Reuters) -Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Saturday his troops had strengthened positions in Russia's Kursk region nearly two weeks into their incursion, and called for bold decisions by Kyiv's allies to allow long-range strikes.

Ukraine says it has seized more than 80 settlements over 1,150 square km (444 square miles) in Kursk since Aug. 6 in the biggest invasion of Russia since World War Two.

Zelenskiy said his army chief Oleksander Syrskyi had reported that Ukrainian troops continued their advance and also took more Russian servicemen as prisoners.

Absolutely yes, they now have war inside their boundaries, the first reporters to be in were Italians and they sent wide coverage of a Russian war zone with ruins, prisoners and civilian refugees. That was the fruit of a very careful evaluation and absolute secrecy. The area had nearly no troops and the Ukrainians met almost no resistance. This is a huge psychological victory for Ukraine.
It won't be easy to maintain position and revenge by the furious Putin will be certain but now the Russians will be reluctant to send all troops into the Donbass territory, leaving the borders unprotected.

Trump might be able to get Ukraine and Russia to stop fighting. A real peace is harder.

In the Kyiv Independent in October, Timothy Ash, a fellow at London's Chatham House think tank, said Ukraine was effectively neutral until Russia's first invasion in 2014.

"Its military weakness and neutrality were a green light for Russian President Vladimir Putin to annex and invade Ukrainian territory," he wrote.

"It's hard to imagine such a status would deter Putin from attacking again. The only assurance against further Russian aggression is a strong defense, ideally in alliance with Western partners."

In my view, both parties are interested to a peace negotiations. It may start with a temporary cease-fire. Ukraine will have surely to renounce to NATO and to some territories. Putin will tout it as an incredible victory, whereas it has been a sound defeat since the prime purpose was to conquer all of Ukraine.

Could such a deal embolden Putin? All is possible, but an attempt is an attempt. Mr. Trump now is very respected from Putin, especially so after his legendary escape from the 1st assassination attempt. His diplomats will have to deliver and effective stick-and-carrot package.
