Title: Vedic Eastern/Western and Tropical Approach
Post by: Jitendra Hydonus on Oct 07, 2021 09:27 am
In life I have often found it difficult to find the right approach to various approaches to the different ways of understanding life. And specifically on which way and view is best suited for myself and others. I recently talked with Art on the phone and he made this point about astrology as well. That is ‘there are two different methods that lead to the same ultimate understanding but the methods and procedures can often be different in how we come to those conclusions and assessments.

We all have our own song to sing, many different forms of life in the jungle, none of them are wrong

So far what I have found from our talks is that the Vedic approach takes the Ascendent so very importantly. At least from a astronomical view, there is a 23 degree difference in the signs from the eastern approach and western. The eastern approach has the actual constellations behind the signs. Those constellations are said to have a certain affect on us. In that sense the ascendent would carry a much different meaning and look to a person having Gemini ascendent in a tropical approach and a Taurus rising in a Vedic/sidereal approach. An observation and incongruity that cannot really be ignored in comparison.

The traditional approach of the Vedic is to ignore planetary and celestial objects not visible to the naked eye; an approach I find very limiting in scope, since it is quite obvious Pluto is a very important influence in a persons natal chart and even more noticeable in transit!

There may be many sounds and songs in the jungle but when they come close to one another they also can become a cacophony to the ears … making it difficult to distinguish one from the other. Meaning is difficult to find when one language is indistinguishable from another yet carries different meanings. So we make attempts to compare and find what makes most sense and is most applicable in the comparison.

Tropical signs are ahead of sidereal. In this example, the person's sun sign is Taurus in tropical and Aries in sidereal. The difference is usually about 24 degrees, depending on the sidereal system used.

I am beginning to believe that the western approach to astrology is more ego oriented and exemplifies the physical aspects of a persons aura, while the eastern approach to astrology goes beyond our small solar system, recognizing stars and their influences and shows the larger aspects of a person’s consciousness and spiritual goals.

The eastern approach shows the position of the stars accurately and the western approach uses all the present planets known to science and astronomy. Neptune having spiritual and psychic influences and Uranus bring awakening and discovery. Pluto’s job is to transform us.

I consider a sidereal chart somewhat more spiritual because it is more dependent on the correct location of the stars and not the ego orientation of western astrology based on the seasons and the Sun; which after all is symbolic of the ego. Without denying the tropical or western astrology we can combine the far off planets to the Vedic system to create and astrology for the Dwapara Yuga.

Sidereal and tropical are astrological terms used to describe two different definitions of a year. They are also used as terms for two systems of ecliptic coordinates used in astrology. Both divide the ecliptic into a number of "signs" named after constellations, but while the sidereal system defines the signs based on the fixed stars, the tropical system defines it based on the position of vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere (i.e., the intersection of the ecliptic with the celestial equator). Because of the precession of the equinoxes, the two systems do not remain fixed relative to each other but drift apart by about 1.4 arc degrees per century. The tropical system was adopted during the Hellenistic period and remains prevalent in Western astrology. A sidereal system is adopted in Hindu astrology, and in some 20th century systems of Western astrology.

While classical tropical astrology is based on the orientation of the Earth relative to the Sun and planets of the solar system, sidereal astrology deals with the position of the Earth relative to both of these as well as the stars of the celestial sphere. The actual positions of certain fixed stars as well as their constellations is an additional consideration in the horoscope.
